Soon to be Lazydaze Owner in need of a Tire Recommendation
Hello All,

 I'm a soon to be Lazy Daze owner buying an 31 Island Bed that will need some new tires to bring it home to Ohio. I've searched the data base and see that mostly it's Goodyear or Michelin getting the good reviews, with the Goodyear G947 getting the best reviews overall.

The problem is that the G947 has been discontinued. So, I'm looking for any up to date advice on what's currently out there.

This will be the first of many posts since this is my first RV.

Congratulations on your LD 31 IB and welcome to the LDO Forum.  I think you'll find this place is a friendly neighborhood and as importantly, full of people with more knowledge about Lazy Daze's of every flavor that it often boggles my mind.  When you get a change it would be a pleasure to read how you found your LD and any pictures you care to share.  And safe travels back home.

The used LD that I bought came with new tires, however they were a chinese made brand, and I wasnt too comfortable with that.  So I asked my RV mechanic what brand of tire he used, and he swore by Toyo tires.  Hmmm...  I then had the LD over to a big-rig suspension company here in Tucson to get an alignment and I asked the service manager what tires he recommended.  I expected that he would say Michelin, but he said absolutely not, he only recommends Toyo tires.  Wow, ok I see a pattern here.  While I was in the waiting room I started talking with a fellow who owned a Bluebird RV and I asked him what tires he was running.  He said that he swore by Toyo and he had 8 tires on his rig, with duallies and a tag axle.  He said that he got 70k miles out of the first set and only changed them because they aged out.  I went and talked with a fellow at Discount Tire that I have used for years, and he said that Toyo made a great tire.  So I ordered 7 of them and had all tires including the 16 year old spare changed out.  The total cost for all 7 tires, with road hazard warranty, was $1200.   I dont know how well they will hold up, but just drove 1500 miles over to Morro Bay and back and they had a very smooth ride.  We shall see.....

I’m running these  BFGoodrich Commercial T/A All-Season 2 All-Season Radial Tire - LT225/75R16/E 115R Amazon.com: BFGoodrich Commercial T/A All-Season 2 All-Season Radial Tire -...  And have been very happy with them so far. About 4000 miles so far. They were recommended by Discount Tire when I replaced my Toyo’s After a blowout.

Having used Michelin's for 40 years on vans and the LD without a single problem, I would not consider any other brand.

Hi Ron,
Good to learn another LD is coming to Ohio. If you live in north east Ohio, I can tell you where I have been buying tires and getting service done.

One of the challenges I have found is finding places that are willing to do work on Rvs. Even something like getting new tires can be problematic.

Your experience echoes mine...my Michelins were problematic... early cracking/crazing, the cheaper BFGoodrich had multiple blow outs and failures [bubbles/bumps], and when I went to replace them, Les Schuab truck center manager recommended the Toyos..going on four years, and am very happy with them. And yes, I do monitor my vehicle weight and had tire minder pressure valves on them all.

I'm in Athens and I haven't even started to think about where I'm going to get service down here.  The first servicing is going to happen in Portland Oregon and the first adventure will be bringing it home.

 Lots to coordinate and learn, this being my first RV. Good to finally take the plunge though.

 I've been hearing a lot about the Toyo's, mostly good but usually for models that are running on bigger rigs. I was quoted some Toyo Open Country HT's. What are you running?

 I'm having a complete 30,000 mile service done at the Ford dealership before I bring her home. Oil, transmission, bleed the brakes, etc. They also quoted Toyo's but a really low price that makes me a little suspicious... $900.00

I was concerned about passenger car designed pickup tires touching in a dual wheel application.
The chassis with dual wheels   is a "commercial " /working vehicle.  I chose a Commercial tires.

Tires are like coffee opinions in the RV world.  

In Portland Or.   I go to Industrial Tire.  They are not cheap but they do a complete job using truck application parts.  They are the place Northside Ford Truck Sales Inc. | Ford Dealership in Portland OR uses for tire issues.

There are many Les Schwab places.   Discount Tire is also a good place.   The problem is finding a place that will do a front and back tire alignment.      IMHO if you are going to put out up to $1200 in tires you should have them balanced at high speed and aligned.

I try to have the balance done with the TPMS units installed.... Don't know how much it matters tho'.

The Tire Rack website offers an overview of appropriate application tires for the Ford E-350 and E-450, i.e., LT225/75R/16 load range E.

As far as I know, Goodyear no longer manufactures the 'G' Unisteel tires; these tires were the only appropriate size tires besides the Michelin XPS Rib (current manufacture) to offer steel-belting in the sidewalls. If one is interested in a Goodyear tire that might substitute for the 'G' tires, I suggest checking with Goodyear; if the tires are no longer manufactured, any 'G' tire still on the shelf in a tire shop are likely to be old stock.

Whichever brand one chooses, make sure that the tire size is a 225/75R/16 load range E (rarely, a load range D for old, small/light LDs) and application (LT - 'light truck') are appropriate. 'Highway All-season' tires are a common descriptor.

Tread wear on RVs, unless the alignment is off, is much less than sidewall wear; sidewalls on tires are subject to a great deal of weight, stress, and heat. Overweight conditions and underinflation are the major tire killers for RV tires; tire inflation numbers should be determined by loaded four-corner rig weights.

Make sure that the tire shop agrees to provide tires within your age specs; a lot of tire shops seem to specialize in 'smoke blowing' and general BS, so don't accept whatever the shop might have on the shelf in the back room. A reputable, knowledgeable tire shop will do this for the customer; if they refuse, find another shop. You want the freshest tires, date-matched, and installed with the DOT manufacturing codes on the outside. Check the tire 'stack' before and after installation to make sure the tires match your specs, and do the installer a big favor by removing the wheel covers before you take the rig to the shop! Very few shops know how to remove or replace the 'double nut' types.

I suggest having an alignment done after installing new tires; on older E-450s, ask the alignment tech to check that the cams/bushings are the adjustable type. (I don't know what's on later model E-450s, but my 2003 came with 'fixed' cams; I had Moog adjustable cams installed to make adjusting the camber, caster, and toe more 'precise'.)

A note: I've always run Michelins on my 2003; the current set is the Michelin Defender. After 114k miles on the brand, I have found no reason to change; YMMV.
