Porch Light troubleshooting
Hi - We have a 2011 Lazy Daze. The porch light is not working. My first assumption was burnt out bulb. However, there is no replacement for the bulb. I guess with these fancy LED lights, you just replace the whole thing. So where can I get a new porch light? Also, what is involved in replacing it? Is there any troubleshooting I can do before replacing the light? I am very good with fixing things, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

"However, there is no replacement for the bulb."

How very odd! Just recently I removed the automotive 12v porch light bulb and replaced it with an LED version. Do you have 12v at the fixture?   ::)

If it had an incandescent bulb, either a bad bulb or bad socket contact would be logical. However, an LED fixture is more unlikely to fail. First step is to check the connections for the presence of 12V, and if not there, the fixture is not the problem.

So it is an LED light already - What did you replace yours with? I have no idea how old it was, but I thought LED lights last forever.

I don't want to sound like a dummy, but what do i use to test for the presence of 12V? a simple $3 tester? We are out on the road with no step ladder with us, but it looks like there are several tabs around the light that I can depress to remove the cover.

Thanks

The bulb is replaceable. Try that first. Don't replace the fixture.

Welcome to the Lazy Daze Owners' Forum. What model Laze Daze do you have?

Don't be so hard on yourself, we all had to learn the basics first!

Yes, the bulb is replaceable. In it's original configuration the fixture has an ordinary 12v automotive bulb such as you would find used for many applications, tail lights, parking lights, etc.. I don't recall the #s right off hand but they can be purchased in any auto store. LED bulbs do last longer and offer a brighter light as well.

Most of us carry an inexpensive multimeter (volt/ohm meter) in our rigs. It's simple to touch one meter lead to one side of the bulb socket and the other lead to the center contact. If there is voltage present the meter will indicate such.

Yes, the cover of the fixture is removable. Try pressing upward and outward on the lower side of the cover. It should pop right off. Once you are inside take note of the bulb. If it has expired the interior will be smoky looking. If you have a replacement bulb at hand insert that in the socket and see if it lights. About the same thing you would do with a light in your house at home.

If you can remove the lens, then the bulb may be replaceable, if an LED. Use any tester designed for 12V across the bulb contacts while it is in the socket. If near a Harbor Freight, this model would do the job:

7 Function Digital Multimeter

Thanks for the reply - The only reason that I thought that the bulb was not replaceable, is because i looked in the owner's guide on the bulb replacement chart and for Porch Light (LED) and it says "no replaceable bulb". So if indeed it is replaceable, that will be great news. When i get home from out trip, I will take the cover off and take a closer look. I will also get a meter and check things out.

Even on a rig as new as yours I seriously doubt that LD has gone to some new exotic type of fixture. Yes, ALL bulbs are replaceable! The porch light, all the marker/clearance lights, even the work light if you have one. I have a 2004 model and all of my bulbs have been exchanged from the original incandescent to the brighter and longer lived LEDs.  ;)

Thanks, going to check it out tomorrow. It only makes sense that the build should be replaceable. I was just suprised that the owner's manual said that it was not replaceable.

I've replaced all of my interior incandescent fixtures with an LED fixture I liked, the LED bulbs in them are definitely not replaceable. My porch light I replaced the bulb with LED. These things can fail and if they are going to usually it's right away. Do you have any other lights not working as in maybe a bad fuse?
