LD pick up lead time
Hi Folks,

We wonder how much time we will have to make pick up arrangements on our new LD.  We are looking at early December and need to make lots of arrangements to get there at the right time.  Any comments are welcome.

Thanks,
Annette and Steve

In my experience, the "call" came about a week before the delivery date, but since that was 15 years ago, I have no idea what the protocol is now. Only the factory can provide a definitive answer on this; you might want to call Todd and get at least a rough estimate for the time between "it's ready" and pick up.

One thing that I do suggest is to try to schedule the delivery during morning hours; the check out/go through/"make sure there are no glitches" process takes at least a couple of hours, and, depending on where you need to go after taking delivery, avoiding at least a little of the post 3 p.m. traffic crush and getting to where you need to be for the first night out while it's still light are good plans. (It gets dark about 5:00 in early December.)

We picked up our 2017 about a year ago.  We had ample notice to plan, about 2-3 weeks ahead.  It is best, IMO, to schedule a morning walk-thru, then get out of the valley as soon as the walk-thru is over.  That traffic is B-A-D.  An alternative would be to stay at the Pomona KOA that afternoon and evening, try everything out at the KOA, then leave uber early the next morning.  Of course, some of the planning depends on which way out you would be going.  We are NorCaler's so we went for the I-5 over Cajon.  If you are headed east or south, there are others here on this forum much more experienced and qualified to give you SoCal traffic advice.  I'm sure some will weigh in on this, and they will know better then me how to beat the rush.

Just consider the post-pickup traffic your “baptism of fire!”  It sure excited this then-rookie. 😬 — Jon

We picked up our LD on June 12, 2017.  Todd contacted us a couple of weeks ahead of the delivery and we flew from Florida, the day before so we could meet Todd first thing in the morning.  He gave us a good three hours going through all the systems.  This was our first RV, and although I had spent a couple of weeks reading the manual, I must admit that it was tough to remember everything.  We had booked the Pomona KOA for three nights so if something went wrong, needed tweaking, or I just had questions, the mothership was close.  It turned out that everything was perfect and after three nights in California we headed home.  It was a great experience.
We know you'll love your new LD.  Have fun.

Some folks video Todd’s presentation for later reference, a great idea IMHO. — Jon

Guess because it’s so close (finally) we don’t want last minute problems since we are coordinating a flight to CA for our daughter to pick up our current camper and us to drive cross country to pick up the LD!

All good advice - thanks so much.  We will contact Todd by early November for sure.

Sticking around the area for a couple of days or so is a very good idea, IMO; any "warts" or issues uncovered post-delivery can be taken care of at the factory before going wherever in the new LD. I stayed at East Shore RV park to take two days of driving instruction, returned to the factory to have one issue fixed (improperly mounted toilet), then headed to Ridgecrest for Tireman's valves. (Chuck passed away earlier this year.)

The KOA is not far from the factory, and there are other "stay fairly close" options that have been discussed on this forum; a search should bring up several threads with this information.

Just an opinion: Videoing the check out session could be helpful, particularly if there is one person to video and one to listen closely and ask questions.  ;)

A few other notes if I may.   December is winter in SoCal.  That means very short days and rain.   Rain stroms can hit the LA area very hard.
Assuming I 10 as the highway home you'll be under LA area weather till just about Palm Springs.   After Palm Springs the weather improves greatly.  In a word warm.   If ya in the mood you'll be passing Joshua Tree National Park.  Great BLM land to boondock on just outside the park.  And if your pickup date moves later in the month Quartzite in just off the highway.

Just an FYI, East Shore has changed names and management.
