The small canisters are very overpriced. If you feel confident in reloading them yourself, why not do it. Make sure you check for leakage.

Something about turning that propane tank upside down raises red flags for me.

Hi,
Friends & I fish the Wolf River in Wisconsin, famous for its White Bass run in May.
Typically, I start in April when the Walleye are abundant in the river and I'll fish into the White Bass
run, until the end of May.  We fish nights as often as days and go through many 1lb bottles of propane which
fuel our propane lanterns.
Several years ago I peeled out a few bucks for a fitting to fill a 1lb bottle from the larger grill-sized tank.
Per directions, it works best if the large tank is warm from the sun and the 1lb bottles are cooled.
It's a bit of a process but I haven't bought a 1lb bottle since.  They only fill to about 2/3 or 3/4 full, but that's plenty for a couple nights of fishing.
If you're like me and  don't mind going through the process and like saving yourself the cost of the overpriced 1lb bottles,
not to mention the shopping for them, I'd say it's easy enough and remains worth it to me.

In turning the large tank upside down, the propane "flows" into the 1lb. bottle.

If you have a 1-lb propane cylinder, go take a look at it and see what is says about refilling it.
My can warns of an explosion possibility and mentions a Federal penalty of up a $500,000 fine and five years in prison for transporting it.
The valve was not design for multiple refills and can leak. Think boom.
Might be better to buy the small cans or use an adaptor on a bigger, 10 or 20-lb refillable cylinder.

I have other things to do in the next five years that will take about $500,000 to accomplish .

Instead of trying to re-fill the disposable canisters I bought a small tank that can be re-filled at any propane filling place.  I bought an adapter hose to make it work with my Weber Q.  In my old 1987MP I stored the tank in the compartment(its tall) where the generator would normally go.  With my new to me 2003 T/K the tank will fit(barely) in an outside storage compartment if put in horizontally then turned vertically between the wood rails.  I generally still carry one of the disposable canisters as a back-up if the tank runs low.  I also got rid of my propane lantern and bought a led light instead.

These are legal to refill, they utilize a fill valve designed for repeated use.

"My can warns of an explosion possibility"
For sure, that would be one one of the one pounders not to refill!
That kit looks slick, with an extension on the valve to clear the stand which holds an upside down tank, but a lot of extra
to store and deal with as compared to a much smaller small valve fitting that would fit in a back pocket of a pair of jeans or a jacket. Of the two though, the smaller one sure would be easier to misplace.

To the OP, some opinions will be along yea lines, others nay.  In the end, if you decide to try refilling,
it would be prudent to be mindful of Larry's Good Point,  that not all 1 lb tanks are meant to be refilled.
