2017 MB Got a Boo Boo. What Do I Do Do?
While getting ready to wash and wax today, I noticed a dent in the side located to the left of the door stop.  See pictures.  It looks like it was caused by a stone.  It doesn't appear to have perforated - Yet.  I'm concerned that it will become perforated and water get in and cause ruckus.  My temporary solution is to dab a little sealant on the area.  I have a tube of Lexel Sealant by Sashco.  It says it's the duct tape of caulking.  Any other suggestions?

Odd place for stone damage. From the picture, I would not worry about water getting in. Put whatever makes you feel good over until you can get it repaired.

The Ford Oxford White touch-up paint is a perfect match for the white paint on your Rig.  This product comes with clear coat to use after the white paint is dry.  If you're able to smooth out the damaged area, apply the Oxford White, you might be surprised how well looks.   One thing is certain about RV travel and that's if you use your Rig it's going to gradually takes some hits.  And it's always painful.

Glenn,

I feel your pain, but I know where my “Boo Boo” came from-U-Haul trailer hitch I snagged with our coach door 5 months after we took delivery.

My damage did penetrate the fibreglass coach door. Thanks to Vince it was as good as new and just in time for my daughters and my trip to Yosemite.

Cost? Less than $400 and for me well worth every penny. My advice? Call Vince. Your LD is too new to start piling up “little nasties”.

Your call. I’ll give you the dime.

Well, I talked to Vince at the Mothership and sent him some pictures.  Looks like I'll be taking a trip to California.

That's a long trip to fix a single ding.....and it won't be the last one your LD's suffers. Keep it long enough and you will have many of them.
A local body should be able to make it look like new for a few hundred or less, a lot less than the cost of fuel coming and returning to Detroit. Many would consider this to be a DIY project.
There is nothing special about the paint, it's the same color Ford has used for years. Any auto paint store can mix it.
Most auto parts stores will have the right color in touch-up tubes or spray cans.

Glenn,

Welcome back to California. Well almost anyway. Plenty to see and do between here and home.

No telling what caused your boo boo, but probably something just wanted to get closer to that thing of beauty.

Two years ago, while in Zion, we had several birds try their best to fly through what they may have only imagined was a cave, but instead bounced off the large LD window above the couch. Left only a smudge.

Looks like you guys didn’t fair so well. Not the greatest reason to travel out west but a least it’ll get fixed right the first time.

Enjoy your trip.

Treated Ruby like the gem that she was since we got her in August 2004. At the 2006 50 year gala in Cheyenne, I had our bikes parked near the back and something happened and one fell over into the back corner of the ol girl. I exclaimed, gasped and placed my hand over my mouth nearly in tears. Someone (Terry Tanner? who was the guy with the kayak contraption on his roof? He was parked nearby and I think it was him)  walked up looked at it, shrugged and said, too bad, you’ll get plenty more. No one can even see that unless right up close. He was right.

That left a mark on me since I still remember it so vividly. It’s a moving house. It’s going to get dings and squeaks and who knows what over the years. Enjoy the ol girl and the places she takes you and don’t sweat the dings and squeaks. Hard to do but you’ll enjoy her most if you can let it go.

After owning all sorts of vehicles, I’ve gotten used to the occasional door ding and dent. Don’t look to closely at our rig or you’ll notice a nice dent in the generator hatch/door (?). I know it’s there but I really don’t notice it unless I get up close.

Now that my Avalon is nearing 17 years, I’ve grown accustomed to the roads abuse and the normal paint ware. Some of us can deal with the abuse and occasional acciDENT. Others of us just can’t leave the little things alone.

As Larry said, that’s a long way to travel for a repair some one else may be very qualified to handle. With that I’m curious as to what concerns Vince has about your boo boo. Electrolysis perhaps?

Vince is a very passionate man and has always wanted the best for my rig. I trust him to do right by me and he always has.

We are talking about a Recreational Vehicle here so it’s not like you have to hustle out to California without making a “journey” out of it. Like I said earlier, there’s plenty to see between home and Montclair and if the Mothership is part of the trip all the better. Beats Disneyland.

Just sayin’

It's two dents that have perforated through.  Whatever projectile produced it must have been big.  My previous 2002 MB had the usual wear and tear in its 15 years.  But there was one area that I didn't  attend to that grew to multiple electrolysis-like corrosion bubbles.  Now I'm over-cautious.  I will be retiring in 4 days.  So this trip to California will be a wandering adventure.

Congrats on the retirement. You beat me by 5 weeks. Maybe I should head the opposite direction across the country and make it a grand adventure as well.

;D   ;D   ;D  Naw, not Terry Tanner... Who do you know who's into Kayaks? Why our own Larry Wade of course, and I was parked just across the street from him at that venue.   ;)

If it is perforated, that is different. Couldn't tell by looking at the photos.
When our LD was just over a year old, I turned away from a curb too quickly and when the rear swung around, it clipped a pipe bollard and made a neat 1" slice in the aluminum siding. It wasn't a good day.
Being so new, it went back to the Mothership, with Progressive's approval. It was a shorter drive than your's, less than 1-1/2 hours away, on a good day. Instead of Bondo, the damaged aluminum panel was replaced and repainted.
They do good work.

Have a good time on your trip out West to California. It's a big state that can take lifetime to explore.

Was able to get the dent/hole repaired locally.  My main concern was that the dents were almost perforated through the skin.  I definitely didn't want water getting in!  I could never quite figure out what type of projectile made the holes.  At first I thought they were bullet holes, but they were two close together.  It almost looks like a two-toothed vampire or snake bite.   The body shop applied a fiber glass to aluminum patch and repainted the area.  This was essentially what Vince was going to do.

I called Progressive Insurance to see if my policy would pay for the repair.  It would and there was no deductible.  But when I asked if my premium would increase at renewal time and by how much, they couldn't guarantee that it would not and couldn't say how much if it did.  I paid for it out of pocket.

That should have been a Comprehensive coverage los and as such there wouldn't be an increase due to fault and depending on the company and policy the first at fault doesn't result in an increase. However, even with no claims activity on your part they couldn't have guaranteed rates wouldn't increase. Rates increase due to overall claims activity and expenses and aren't determined by the claims department.

That said, I carry the largest deductible that they offer on both our car and LD.
