Exterior Storage Between Models
The propane grill thread, and specifically Larry's post about exterior storage, got me wondering about the differences between exterior storage between the different models. I found this in the Companion but it doesn't answer the amount of storage question:

The Lazy Daze Companion: Exterior Compartments

I understand the 31 ft. models have the most storage capacity while having the least carrying capacity but what about the differences between the 24 and 27 foot lengths and the different models within those lengths? I recall my '85 TK didn't have much exterior storage so I want to have more in the next LD.

Hi Greg,

I suggest you go online and check out the factory website.  From there you can click on the homepage to access the specifications.  Try this link:  http://www.lazydaze.com/FEATURES.PDF

You can then compare the number of outside compartments between the two 24 foot models and the two 27 foot models.

Hope that helps.

Hello
We have the same question.  We are interested in the 27ft mid bath.  Would love to see some storage area pictures and know the measurements.

The sizes of the compartments varies so just the number of compartments is deceiving.
Our 23.5' Front Lounge only has two exterior compartments but one is twice the height and extra deep, compared to most compartments. It's where the BBQ fits.

In case it's helpful, we have a 2016 24' TK, which has 4 exterior storage compartments, 2 per side. At first this seemed barely enough. Plus the roughly 9-inch openings made it challenging to fit in some of the things I like to carry, such as a small toolbox, propane fireplace and folding trainer for riding my bike in place should there be no safe place to ride near the campsite.

We also carry 2 X-pens and 2 folding crates for our dogs, folding chairs, an easy up, a screen tent and more. Our goal is to keep all this stuff outside so as not to clutter up the inside. Or else when you stop somewhere for a short stay, you have stuff all over the place in the way.

When we started using the Lazy Daze, we carried some of this stuff inside because we thought we had to. But, over time and with a bit of experimentation, we have figured out how to get almost everything inside the storage compartments. The openings are on the small side but the 2 in the back are pretty deep and quite long. We found if you put the stuff in carefully and in the correct order, you can put a lot more in than it appeared at first. It's impressive how much they can actually hold in my opinion.

One "trick" we use (not our idea), was to cut up a rubber horse stall floor mat to make levelers (available in Northern California at "Tractor Supply" stores). A 4 x 6-foot x 3/4-inch thick mat cost about $45 and when cut into tire-wide strips lets us stack them and level the rig most everywhere. But, related to this post, they are super easy to slide into the storage compartments even when they're almost full - unlike more bulky levelers.

The other thing that helps us is using a flashlight to see way back into the compartments to make sure every spot is used before we put in the items that require more space and only fit near the front.

I guess these tips are obvious but it took us a while to figure them out so I thought I'd explain.

Happy travels!

Oh, now I have "storage compartment envy"!  ;)  My 2003 has only three exterior compartments. I wonder if LD added the fourth compartment on the driver's side when they reconfigured the black and grey tank sizes and combined the two termination valves into one?

Hi Joan. I am even more jealous than you. My '99 TK only has the two long above floor level storage compartments. I guess the greater GVWR of the E450 chassis allowed the extra storage compartment below the floor in back on the passenger side. I didn't know there was a fourth compartment now. Where is that one?   RonB

I didn't know there was a fourth compartment, either, Ron! The small "third" compartment on my 2003 is on the passenger side just in front of and a bit below the long compartment; it's suitable only for storage of lightweight items, so I carry the Lynx levelers, tire covers, tablecloths, bungees and a few other light objects in that one.

Maybe the owners of the "4 compartment TKs" will let us know where LD put the one on the driver's side? (Probably a twin to the small compartment in size and location on the passenger side?)

If you covet exterior storage, find yourself a now-deceased Rear Kitchen model; five exterior compartments with two being 2 foot by 2 foot doors and three compartments having “main flooring bases” meaning you can store serious stuff there. 2 compartments are the plastic floor only, 9 inch high slots and as previously reported, one compartment has a mix of the plastic floor in the front foot and the “main flooring” in the back foot+ ( deep enough to hold a Weber Q100 —- I mean, it’s like that space was made for that grill). This latter space, “flows into” one of the plastic bottom spaces as really two doors on the same space. You can store something at least 6 feet long, maybe longer, in the back of this space.

The PS space behind the Passenger seat and in front of the main cabin door sits above the propane tank door and generator door and is 9 inches high but is a good 5 feet in length (perhaps a bit less, i’m On the road this week and unable to measure) completely sitting on the main flooring of the LD.

These aren't the best photos, but you should be able to make out the 4 storage compartments, I think. On each side there's one high one and one low one. The photo of the driver's side has glare on it making it hard to see the forward, low compartment, but look close and you can make it out. It's ahead of the rear wheels and near the drain pipe.  Hope you can see it.
Best wishes,
Jim

For myself, although exterior storage is a consideration, it's only one of many. We did have the opportunity to tour a rear kitchen model at the 2017 Morro Bay GTG. While I kind of liked it, DW did not like the fact that the kitchen was isolated from the rest of the coach so . . .

What was the last year the rear kitchen was manufactured, by the way?

I think the last RK model was 2016 but i’m Not sure.

Your DWs reason for not liking it is exactly why my DW loved it. Her joy in life (besides moi!!J is cooking and she didn’t want the kitchen in the middle of all the hubbub of me and the dogs coming and going. She disliked the MB for this very reason.

It’s too bad LD is shrinking the number of models available. I get it but giving a number of options is ideal IMHO.

I now have compartment envy too; our 2007 TK also has only three exterior storage compartments. I wonder if the 4th compartment was added to the TK in 2010 when the capacity of both holding tanks and the propane tank was increased. If Steve went through all that effort to redesign that area of the coach it would seem logical he would add the 4th compartment and combine the two dump valves into one as part of the redesign. Can anyone confirm what year the 4th compartment was added?

I saved these conservative (not exact) measurements of the 6 exterior compartment doors and depths on our 06 MB on my phone with the intent of shopping for plastic bins that will fit thru doors at hardware store or maybe Costco.

The interior of a few are much wider than door so that's the "int" width.

I did not get the interior height but usually a few inches more than door height.

The previous owner of our mid bath removed the driver side couch in the rear, thus eliminating one of the largest storage spaces. Forced me to be more conservative with "stuff" but I sure do like the comfortable swivel chair he installed. And I found a flip-top ottoman at Wal-Mart which holds a good assortment of odds & ends

I had a 2003 Twin-King and now have a 2017 Mid-Bath.  I haven't taken any measurements, but I was very pleasantly surprised with the amount of exterior storage I have in the Mid-Bath.  I had expected that the spare tire in one of the exterior compartments in the Mid-Bath, instead of in the back like in the Twin-King,  would have limited exterior storage space.  I think that I have much more storage now with the Mid-Bath.
