Many years ago we were having lunch in a Santa Barbara restaurant when a good shaker hit.  It was easy to tell the tourists from the long time locals by their reactions.

Many years ago, preparing for a trip to the Mammoth Mountain backcountry we were having a last breakfast at a local cafe when a temblor hit - the plate glass window was flexing, the building made scary noises, and our dishes were dancing around our table as we held on for dear life! It stopped, and the waitress came by and calmly topped off our coffee cups before continuing her rounds...

Having experienced a minor quake while in western Pennsylvania a few years ago, I can tell you that a motorhome is about the best way imaginable to ride out a quake. Tires and suspension work perfectly to soak up the ground movement--that's what they were designed to do, after all! :-)

One can have a similar California shaker experience just by driving on almost any of our roads!  ;)

Another one? They even have their website up at NewCalifornia
At least they mentioned the State of Jefferson which, for the record, has already seceded once back in November 1941.  Events of the next month sort of overshadowed the effort.

The San Andreas fault has had an ongoing process to split the state, at a somewhat pace somewhat more sedate than the Legislature.
