Our mission was to deliver Marines to the beachhead, either by air or sea. The division I was in was responsible for the ballasting of the stern which allowed amphibious landing craft to come and go. Don't think I've ever seen one of these before:1961 Vintage Aljo - rvs - by owner - vehicle automotive saleI don't remember how he came up with it, but my realtor dad came up with something like this in one of his trades in about '66 or so, except that the bunk section went clear over the roof of the car, & there was just enough room to step into the back with a stove/sink/below-the-counter icebox/cooler, & a ladder to climb into the bunk area behind the bumper--definitely only for sleeping/minimal cooking/nothing to retreat to if rainy weather occurred.My sister & I were upper elementary, so thought the bunk area was really cool for climbing around, but Mother hated camping so we never used it; before he traded it Dad pulled the mattresses out (3" vinyl covered foam) & they got lots of use for bunking parties in the basement (I can still hear my dad hollering downstairs for "all you girls need to go to sleep"--because he wanted to go to sleep ; they later made great tumbling mats for grandkids--& I've still got them in the basement. Discovered I'm a bit claustrophobic when I slept on the inside of a cab-over when Dad rented a Winnie for our last family trip while my sister & I were in college (Dad eventually got Mother a Pace Arrow for their snowbirding, which she never really considered camping...seeing this & remembering that long-ago rig makes me appreciate the LD even more. Even though basements are common, most houses just have a concrete slab for the garage floor, but Dad had a concrete room under the garage, with a hole in the corner to accommodate an air filtration system if that "upgrade" loomed closer on the horizon. The entrance to this room was from the basement area that became the rec room & unfinished storage under the main living part of the house, and it had just a simple wooden door (again, that would have been on the upgrade list if necessary). There was no lockset or knob on the door--just as hasp & a peg Dad shaved down from a scrap dowel. Since we didn't have a dedicated guest room Dad referred to it as "The Mother-in-law Room," joking with the two grannies about that being their accommodations if they didn't behave...what they really got was sharing beds with squirmy kids (instead of "twin" beds, my sister & I inherited double beds when our folks upgraded & grandparents moved from the farm, & we were both used to sleeping all over the bed)...that's how I grew up hearing the Kipling story about "How the Elephant Got His Trunk" from Dad's mother. For domestic production, LD had already shifted to the wide body on the E450 chassis for the 23’ models. Being a newbie to RVing, and wary of the width for driving, I asked whether they would sell me one of the “narrowbody” models. No soap, of course. We’re off to Japan for a tour at the end of August. It would be cool, altho highly unlikely, to catch sight of one of these. — Jon 2 Likes
