Do couches make for comfortable sleeping?
Hi All,
In a former life we had a 26’ Island Bed; loved it but switched to a diesel pusher.  Been there, done that; sold it and returning to the Best Rig Ever!!!  Looking for another 26’ Island Bed (anyone selling a 2012 or newer?), but also considering a rear bath or kitchen.  Can anyone comment on the comfort level of the couch/beds, and on what tricks you made have done to increase their comfort.  We are a bit long in the tooth to use the overhead bunk (but we love having it for our kids!!!)
Many thanks!!!
Bob

I've had DP's with the awful jack knife couches.  Very comfortable for sitting but horrible for sleeping!
The couches in our MB are comfortable for sitting and with an added 3" of memory foam topper are very comfortable for sleeping.  Best of both worlds.

We've been sleeping on the MB sofas pulled together to make an oversize king for just coming up on  years...7 months a year.  Several years ago we replaced the foam and upholstery on both sofa seats and on both dinette seats...not the backs on either.

We don't use a mattress topper, but we do sleep on top of the king sleeping bag that we bought at The Mothership when we picked up "Wild Thing."

We knew when we ordered the LD that we would sleep on the MB sofas.  Takes about 5 minutes each a.m. to restore the sofas to daytime use and about 5 minutes each night to create the bed.

Hi Bob,

We love our ‘15 RB. We have two memory foam pads. For my DW, a 3” pad. For me, a 1 1/2” pad. When we first started traveling, we would pull the couches out and make the “Super King”.

I would haul the two pads (Velcro’ed together) from the overhead and make the bed. This was doable...for a while.

Now we keep the couches pulled out within about a foot of each other (drivers side couch is longer so that’s my side). The pads stay on the couches and are covered with sheets and comfortable fleece blankets that match the interior color of the coach.

Daytime use...the couches are cozy with oversized throw pillows. From all appearances, they are couches.

Nighttime use...the throw pillows eventually help to block the cab’s chilly air and the “sleep” pillows take their place. As a bed, they are roomy enough to toss around in your sleep and the memory foam pads are extremely comfortable and supportive.

It’s a good arrangement for us. Very comfortable couches and beds. No hassle setting up the bed and breaking it down. And...the couch fabric stays like new.

I enjoy a good win-win once in a while.

The 26' IB was discontinued in 2005ish:

LD uses a high quality, firm foam, in the cushions.
The Factory cushions are fine for my wife but too hard for my boney body, the addition of a memory foam pad makes it perfect. YMMV

I sleep on the passenger side lounge coach/bed without a pad and without removing the backrest.   I grab my pillow, a sheet or blanket and it's bedtime.  And I sleep like a baby.   On the other hand, stores that sell mattresses have every choice from soft and cushy to rock hard.  So it always depends on personal choices.

For me the couches are fine for sitting but much too firm for sleeping.  I go with 3" of latex since I'm not a fan of memory foam.  One piece of foam for each side works or you can make up a king bed with them.   When rolled up the foam goes in the cab over which still leaves room for one person to sleep, or nap, there.  It is a relatively safe place to sleep while the coach is driven with the rolled foam between you and the front.

With singles beds during the day, the foam and bedding from one can be carried over to the other and stacked leaving one couch free during the day - if that works for you.   Frank

Many thanks to all who replied about sleeping arrangements with the LD couches; much food for thought, and definitely sounds doable.
We had thought the 26’ Island Bed was discontinued around 2015; thanks for the update as to 2005ish date — hate to see it gone, but it really appears the mid-bath and rear-kitchen and rear-bath are extremely “livable” by day — lots of relaxing and entertaining room.

 Bob,
The last few years my sister and brother in law met us (wife, 25 year old daughter, and I) for Thanksgiving.  They in their class B and us in a LD MB.  The first year the mosquito drove us indoors and the next year the rain did.  Last year was the first year where we ate outdoors.  The girls sat around the table and the guys sat in back.  That we could have fun in the LD the first two years is what made the third year so much fun.   A rear bath might have been better for that big a crowd but we did fine.
Oh I forgot to mention our 80 lb poodle, 20 lb smaller poodle mix, and my sisters dog were all in the RV with the 5 of us.

John,
Our experience has been that those times we are all snuggled together having fun are the most memorable.   We can so relate to your story from our early days with 2 young ‘un’s, 2 adults, 2 cocker spaniels, and a cat in an 8 foot slide in camper — camping in the Washington State rain.  Boy, did we have fun!!!  Thanks for triggering those memories for us, and I’m sure for many others.  (And traveling with our pets is a must!!)

When we picked up our mid bath in 2003 the couches were fine to sleep on.  As we got older an inch of foam was added to the top.  We're now up to three inch mattress toppers for both of us.  Works great for now.  Hope this helps.

BTW - I was fifty eight when we got Daizy in '03.  Do the math and you'll see that the older you get the more padding you need.

For some of us, the older we get the more padding we automatically get!   ;)

And some us achieved that padding thru diligent, sustained effort ::)

1 1/2 inch memory foam and our king travasack from the M’Ship (do they still sell them?). Ahhhh, plenty comfy.

I find the couches in our midbath very comfortable when pulled out to make a king bed. Way better than the island bed mattress we had in our trailer we had that was brand new. I don’t use any extra padding except a king size comforter I put down to protect the cushions.

Yes. LD couches do make comfy beds.  Quick pull out and tear down, too.

I have noticed several posters commenting they use the king size travasack that they bought from the factory. We have a 2007 MB and we also bought the king travasack. We also have four single travasacks that are used for our grand kids and I use one when I travel by myself. I love the travasacks but with the zippers not the Velcro that came with the king from the factory. Has anyone had a zipper put on the king travasack from the factory? Any suggestions on where I could get that done?

Usually a good dry-cleaner has a repairs and alterations department that could take this on.  It would probably be less expensive, however, to go to an independent alterations person in a stand-alone operation (the more hands in the process, the more the cost).

Also, a good source might be an interior decorator who will have a sewing expert in his/her Rolodex.  Also, if you have a good boat and auto interiors refurbisher, one who will make cushions will have the equipment and supplies necessary.

We have a queen travasack (thought we would use the overcab for sleeping when we first got Ruby - nope) with zippers and the king with Velcro from LD. Zippers are WAY better. No matter what, in the morning it is my *** that is hanging outside the sack getting cold while Kristine and the dog are wrapped in luxury on the other side of the bed! 🤣

Speaking of the king travasack from the M'ship, alas they are no longer available from that source.  We have the queen which we love, but in changing to the LD MB with the king bed we are looking for a king travasack.   Does anyone have one in excellent condition that is no longer being used?  I have looked online, and king sizes are made by other manufacturers, but the fabric patterns are so boring compared to what we have, and what I remember the M'ship offering.
