Led rechargeable lantern
I'm looking for some outdoor lighting in the form of LED lanterns. Are there any of you that have found any lanterns that you are particularly enamored with? I'm thinking recharchargeable, high lumin, adjustable brightness and not breaking the bank. Not some throwaway $10 thing.

Dale, I've seen these advertised on TV recently (so it must be good, right?).  I have no personal experience with them, though:

It's kinda cool how they compress for easy storage.

I really like the Black Diamond lanterns.  They work real nice as the stand well and also have a nice hanger incorporated into the design. I have had one in the RV for a while that takes AA batteries (I have rechargeable AA).  I liked it so much I purchased a second one and got the rechargeable battery pack that was an option.  That went to my daughter when she started camping.
The one I gave my daughter is no longer in production.  I got their Apollo Lantern instead and like it even better.   http://www.blackdiamondequipment.com/en_US/headlamps-and-lanterns/apollo-lantern-BD620716_cfg.html

The why:
1. When traveling cross country I often drive until rather late for some legs so I can get to where I want to be spending time.  In the spring, fall and winter that sometimes means it is getting dark or is dark when I find my camping spot.  Also I only recently started towing a car.  When pulling into a camp site I will put a light at either side of the drive (one on the power post) on the other side near the end of the pavement.  These mimic "landing lights" and make it very easy to park.  The Black Dimond lanterns are weather proof so they work in the rain.  They also stand well (the new one has legs but can "stand" with either end up.
2. The light output is adjustable.  I use one as a night light in the bath or hall.
3.  The Apollo will light up a room.  It is very bright.  It also will last a while on a single charge.  If your are really out there in the woods you can add AA batteries as a backup to the rechargeable battery.
4. It is weather proof and rugged.  I like these two features for camping gear.  It kind of makes up for my klutziness (is that a word?).

The bad:
It is not cheep.

We've been looking for long time too.  So far, haven't found one that seems worth the price except for the light recommended by John DaCrema.  $59.95 yikes!

there is this one at REI Ultimate Survival Technologies Spright Recharge LED Lantern with Power Bank....  They also have the earlier version of the Apollo that I liked so much.  Both of these are not as bright as the new Apollo.  The earlier version of the Apollo is no longer sold with the rechargeable battery pack.  But if you buy rechargeable AA you can do that in the RV off the 12 system.  Buying rechargeable batteries and a 12 volt charger will push the price up for a lantern, but then you can use the batteries in other things - but not a clock.  Clocks are not allowed in retirement.  ;~)

A few of us in the Caravan Club have been using Luci Lights for several years.
Originally they were developed for third-world countries, to provide night time lighting in electric-free areas.

Coming in variety of colors or color-changing styles, they are used for both interior lighting and for general campsite illumination. The lights inflate, for use, and and deflate for storage. They will charge in the either condition.

Almost three years ago, we bought a GE LED lantern, at Costco, for around $30. It takes 4 or 8 D-cells, yes a lot of batteries.
We filled it with 8 Duracells and has been used for dozens of nights around the fire or lighting up a card games, still on the original set.  It could use rechargeable batteries but they might never pay for themselves.
It's quite bright and heavy, with 8 batteries, it doesn't blow off the table easily.

Here’s a headlamp that I bought that is usb chargeable and has incredible reach, wide angle, focused, red light, bright white and less so. Rather pricey but a great fit for us.

Here's another vote for Luci lights. The pluses: they recharge themselves with built-in solar cells, they have two light levels (plus flashing), they're lightweight and collapsible, and they cost less than twenty bucks. The model I linked to has a pleasant warm white light and a frosted diffuser that spreads the light around evenly. The minuses: they're not ultra-bright (but I find them bright enough), and they're so lightweight that they can blow away unless hung by the included handle strap.

Some of the first Luci Lights had inflation issues, i.e., they would deflate and sag; I had two of these 'slow leakers'.  The current Lucis don't appear to have this problem.

As mentioned, these lights are not bright - pleasant low light - but the clear Luci in particular provides plenty of 'where's my rig?' light to find one's way home in the dark from the campfire.

Luci Lights are available from several sources, including Amazon.

I use 'gear ties', an LED collar light for the dog, and a few other products, from Nite Ize; their products are also available from several sources, again including Amazon.

Thanks for all of your replies. I ended up buying from Costco on-line. It’s made by CORE EQUIPMENT. It’s their 1000 LUMEN RECHARGEABLE LANTERN. I liked the brightness ( about equivalent to a 60 watt incandescent), rechargeable lithium battery, size 9”H x 6”w x 6L. The quality is acceptable. Priced below $50. I think it will produce enough light for a typical campsite. It should produce enough light to enjoy a meal or game of cards even reading if put on a camp table or hung from the awning. I love that it produces no noise or heat.
Going to Jalama next week to try it out. Dale from Downey.

Tried the lantern at Jalama last week. It does everything I was hoping it would. Very powerful AND recharchable.

A note on the Luci lights - every one we have used has deteriorated rapidly in daily use at home, i.e. in less than 1 yr the plastic has rotted away. Admittedly, this is a bit different from RV use, but not so much compared to their intended one in third-world daily charge useage. Now, I don't know how much air pollution in SoCal might contribute to this, but I don't think local pollution in rural African or Indian villages is likely an improvement. We no longer use them at home, and carry a couple in the rig we may put out on occasion, but frankly the 200W of MPPT solar charging available to keep a more rugged lantern running would be a better choice, in my book.

Dale,

I'm weak for flashlights, can one have too many?  I looked at the Core Lantern after you posted about it.  Figured sooner or later I'd end up with one.  I especially like that it can be dimmed down to 12 lumens or up to 1000. Now that you've reported your satisfaction with it, it'll probably be sooner.  Thanks for the follow-up.

As for flashlights, Pelican rechargeables are hard to beat in my opinion. They have a great product with a fantastic customer relations department and a lifetime warranty.

Yes, I carried Pelican lights for years when working.  Another favorite is the NIghtstick made by Bayco.   Both were introduced to me while working in chemical plants, though neither were rechargeable.  Both tough, sturdy flashlights, and trouble free.

Pelican 7060 LED. The best flash light I’ve ever owned. Rechargeable, lightweight and extremely bright.

Inflatable Luci light story:
We were in a campground and met another couple .  They were interesting, thoughtful, and interested in nature.  I discovered that they hadn't read Aldo Leopold's wonderful collection of essays, "The Sand County Almanac".  The following day, we drove together and visited a park visitor center.  I noticed the book on the shelf in the store and bought it for them.  She began reading that afternoon and that evening we talked about Leopold's observations and thoughts.
The next day they gave us their Luci light.  It lives in the Lazy Daze, we use it often and think of them.
