The Scariest Ride I Ever Took!
I've been on lots of scary rides in the past but I must say the most recent one is in the top 3.  While in Hong Kong, we decided to take a city bus ride up to Victoria Peak.  The road is quite narrow and steep with lots of twists and turns, not to mention traffic. We, of course, being the smart American tourists decided we would sit in the upper level front seat of a double-decker bus going up and down this lovely road.  I equate it to being in the front car of a roller coster with your hands up in the air!  :o  Unfortunately, the photos don't do the ride justice but here are a few.  But the view from the top made it all worthwhile . . .

What was YOUR scariest ride?

Nice photos.  I've been there. We took the funicular to the top which was quite fun. A wonderful place to visit!

My scariest ride was from Keelung to Taipei on Taiwan in the 70s while in the US Navy. We took a cab, and the driver used both sides of the road at top speed the whole way. I can’t remember how many times we were head to head with oncoming trucks, but it was terrifying. Especially knowing that we had to get back to the ship eventually. I did pick up some very cool jade figurines of Buddha and some turtles and frogs that I still have. Maybe they brought me luck.

Funicular huh? I just recall not being all that happy coming down that STEEP slope.
Same deal in the Jeep, going up is fun, going down is not as much.

Scariest ride we ever took was on a flat city street...at night in Cairo.  In a limo headed from airport to hotel we learned the local custom of the time was to turn off the headlights as one approached an intersection, lean on the horn and blast through the lights (pick a color).  Headlights back on when successfully transited the intersection.

And then there was this Egypt Air flight...at the time all commercial airports shared with the military air and at the time all Egypt Air pilots were former military pilots.  Let's just say "taxiing down the runway" offered a new dimension to that experience...yeehaw!

We may have been there around the same time. Our ship, the USS Cleveland LPD-7, pulled into Keelung Harbor for a port visit in 1978 (can't remember the month). I think we took a bus to Taipei.

On this last visit, we flew EVA Air which is the Taiwanese national carrier, I believe, so we transferred planes in Taipei for the leg to Hong Kong.  Apparently, Hello Kitty is very popular there!

After developing judgement, Mu scary rides are few and far between. The rides of my youth will not be recounted. They were just stupid.

I Just rode around the neighborhood to do a check ride with my mother. She is 96. This will be her last drive. It was scary.

I tried to do a 'total recall' of all the beyond-stupid stunts of my young (and not-so-young) years, and came to two conclusions: 1) That survival-enabling dumb luck came into play many more times that odds might suggest, and 2) That my prefrontal cortex apparently took longer than it should have to develop!

The stuff of wonder, for sure.  ;)

My mother gave up driving at age 90 after she momentarlily blacked out on a downtown street in Mill Valley, CA on the way to a meeting. She sideswiped 3 parked cars and turned her car upside down. As the firefighter was cutting her out of her seat belt, she told the EMT person to go inside and "tell them I won't be making the meeting". She was quite miffed when the DMV revoked her license.

Indeed!  My kids' father used to say I had a "low mileage vehicle because (I) only hit the high tops of the hills..." as I went flying over the country roads.  It took a while to sink into my underdeveloped prefrontal cortex...by the Grace of God no combine/tractor/innocent person pulled off a side road in front of me, and I learned my lesson when the dust cloud from the vehicle flying in front of me obscured an intersection.  Twenty+ years later I still shudder at just missing a pickup as I blasted through the intersection/over the hill onto the gravel on the other side & totaled the minivan...& walked away--gravel/dust/blind intersections/a lead foot + stupidity are a bad combination.   :-[

Speaking of back-country road driving... my (now) wife and I were 'hurrying' to an engagement one day, when an combo S-turn/elevated railroad track crossing surprised me, at speed.  My little Italian hatchback handled things really well, but the physics of the situation helped coin the phrase: "Tires that aren't on the ground don't squeal."  And yes, it's come up from time to time since then...
