I have unable to find a list of affected RV extinguishers. Where is a list?

This is important information that’s for sure. However, knowing the mess that “dry chem” extinguishers leave behind they would be my last choice of extinguisher types to use inside my beloved LD.

I carry 4 16 oz foam extinguishers in our RB. I placed one in the cabinet above the curb side couch. There is one above the stove inside the cabinet along with a fresh box of Baking Soda. There are two in the lower bathroom cabinet below the sink. They are all up front in the cabinets where they can be easily seen and accessed.

I also have one Foam Extinguisher in the curb side upper storage bay/compartment outside. I keep this handy in case a neighbor needs assistance.

I have also installed two Halitron Extingishers inside the coach. One is mounted on the bulkhead above and behind the Captains chair. One more Halitron Extinguisher is mounted just inside the RB closet just inside on the lower shelf on the left.

While the Foam Extinguishers would be the First Extinguishers to be used by anyone on board, the Halitron Extinguishers I would use to clear a path to the nearest exit as they are capable of depriving the fire of oxygen very quickly.

I’ve looked into other extinguishers as well, but as of yet I don’t see an immediate need to expand on what I already have in the LD.

The Dry Chem OEM extinguisher still resides by the coach door in case a tree catches fire. I certainly won’t be blasting it inside the rig. Foam cleans up quickly. Halitron leaves no residue. Dry Chem is an awful mess requiring a ton of work to remediate it’s messy remains.

Just for the record...use what you’ve got. But get out quickly. You really only have about 20 seconds, from what I’ve read, to make it out safely. Have an exit plan. Practice it and make sure everyone knows how serious this matter is.

You might want to pick a couple foam extinguishers, for interior fires.

Shooting off a dry chemical extinguisher inside your rig will totally trash the interior, it is nasty stuff.
The residue will rust or corrode any metal it stays on.
Foam extinguishers are clean and do a great job on the type of fires were may encounter inside our LDs.
They don't work well on electrical or under hood fires. Keep the dry chemical extinguishers for that.

Although the 'by the door' extinguisher in my 2003 shows that it's charged (I periodically take it out of the strap, upend it, and whack it a few times with a screwdriver handle), I want to replace it with a 'clean foam' extinguisher, preferably one that can use the same strap. (I can fashion a new 'holder' if this isn't feasible.)

Suggestions?

I had “Mr. & Mrs. FireExtinguisher” come by the house prior to the Solar Eclipse to do a yearly inspection on my Halitron Extinguishers.

While the “Mr.” was there I asked him for his help finding a alternative for the Dry Chem by the coach door. He assured me that there is something better that will fit. That was a while back and I haven’t bothered to find what that alternative is.

I’ll have to get back with him and see what he’s come up with. When I do, I’ll post it here.

Keep the dry chemical and add two or more of the foam extinguishers. You can never have too many.
Beside the dinky stock extinguisher and a several foam fxs, we also carry a 5-lb dry chemical fx.
A dry chemical extinguisher is better suited for any chassis fire, so keep them.

I do already have the small foam extinguishers from Mac in the rig and in the compartments; 8 total. TKs are a bit short on compartment space. I can't think where I'd carry another 5-pound dry chem extinguisher unless it would be in the passenger footwell. (If I move the Viair out of that spot!)  ;)

Hi Joan. I found extra room for a 2 liter foam extinguisher at my entry door. The space in my E350 was pretty deep. I suspect the E450 would be the same. The brown plastic surrounding shell was made by Jeff Farwell who passed away shortly after I got the shell, but you could make one out of wood. LD does that for the MidBath. It seems that Foam extinguishers are hard to find now, and way more than the $20 I paid at Home Depot. Most now are 6 liter, but I did find one 2 liter (SKU 466620K) for around $60. They say you can't use them for class C fires (electrical) but of course you can. Just don't be plugged in or have the generator running. 12vdc wouldn't be a problem. The Foam is water based, so does conduct electricity. Picture included of my installation.    Ron

Thanks, Ron! Good idea; I will check HD and Lowe's for a 2 liter foam extinguisher.

I also like the bigger grab handle that you put by the entry door; I know that the large handle has been standard in newer rigs for some time, but my 2003 needs an upgrade! Suggestions for an online supplier?

For a short time, I worked for a fire protection company servicing fire extinguishers and restaraunt extinguishing systems. We always advised our customers to avoid lower quality extinguisher brands such as Kidde. We mostly pushed the Amerex brand because of their better quality internal parts and seals, and metal handles. I still use Amerex for my personal use. They can be purchased online or through most service companies. I would avoid any products with plastic handles.
