Fresh Cab Rodent Repellent

As mentioned before, Fesh Cab has a wide following. So much so that there seems to be a high demand at the present time driving the price skyward through some on line vendors. Some on Amazon are completely out of stock.

I have found a source on line for my brother and the price is very reasonable.

Between the Fresh Cab in my LD and my cat, Sooty, I feel well protected.

Here’s a few pics of him doing an admirable job at keeping the mice at bay around my home.

Speaking of Fresh Cab. It appears my link was a dead end as well as they too are on back order.

Here’s a link to the company that manufactures Fresh Cab. Interesting offers
available. Like the industrial size shipment. This could be very useful for our LDO members with Barns and Storage facilities.

Luckily for me I just replaced the older packs in my LD. I tossed the used ones around my garage just in case the scent was still strong enough to fend of mice.

P.S. It appears even EarthKind is backordered. Just a busy season? They are located in Bismarck North Dakota. Maybe it’s time to give them a call.

Can the fresh cab be left in the Lazy Daze when you take it out on a trip, or do you remove the packets each time out?

Reference Fresh Cab. FYI, we are currently camping with two other LD friends near Virgin, UT. One of them has found fresh evidence of a rat or rats in the engine compartment and he uses and had just put in Fresh Cab prior to finding the rat droppings.

I would love to know how many people have used this stuff in a vehicle in a location with a known history of rodent issues in the vehicle at that location and it worked or didn't. There are reviewers on Amazon who have reported that it didn't work for them.

In regards to Fresh Cab, I suppose it’s effectiveness depends on the severity of the rodent infestation. Still I will live by the old adage...An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Purchased wisely Fresh Cab is fairly inexpensive and makes no mess and is bio safe. Is it “snake oil”?  I’ve been using it for quite a while and it works for me.

Regarding its effectiveness in my situation, I had one packet gnawed on in my engine compartment when I first began using it nearly two years ago. That was it. No evidence of droppings or damage. All my storage compartments are free of any pest inhabitation. There is no evidence that any critter has ever made their way into the LD. I’m pretty satisfied. I’ve camped all over and the rig is as clean as the day we drove it off the lot at the Mothership.

Harold, in answer to your question. I leave the Fresh Cab in place while traveling and replace the packets every 3 months or so. I always keep an unopened box of Fresh Cab in one of the bays so it’s alwsys close at hand.

A bit confused by its lack of availability right now, but I’ll buy more as soon as it becomes available. Hopefully very soon.

Try your local Tractor Supply - that's where we've purchased it in the past.  Lack of supply could be due to folks closing up camps, winterizing RVs, etc. and buying up stock.

I don't mind sharing that I still enjoy the direct and personal rat population reduction techniques: Snap traps, have-a-hart traps, electrocution traps, and shooting the vermin.  While we were exploring Arizona last week, my son came by the house to do a little watering and turtle care, as well as depleting some of our adult beverage stores. When I carefully inquired, he shared that he and his hunting dog prowled the yard at night and flushed out and shot two of the rodent residents.
What a great time for a kid; no parents in the house, drink Dad's beverages, let the dog hunt and flush out vermin, and a little easy plinking.

Yes they are. Found this beast on top of a friend's V10, where it was 'sleeping off' a dose of rat poison.



We used the same electric trap on the patio early this summer, killing two rats before having a skunk stick its nose into the trap,
to get to the peanut butter treat.
Well, it didn't die, instead it unloaded its full load of stink on our patio, making it an unpleasant place for several weeks.
The smell was so strong that it woke us up, inside a sealed up house, it is a very potent liquid spray.
No amount of washing made a difference.
The trap has since been relocated to a less used area.

If I had known better, I would have taken pictures of my favorite catch, the California Pocket Gopher.  I've had very good success with the Victor brand gopher traps.  Time to go huntin' I guess!

Please, please, PLEASE - don't use rodenticides!!!!  They are the cause of so many raptor/beneficial predator deaths due to secondary rodenticide poisoning as are many pet deaths (secondary and primary).

We are experiencing issues with owls and hawks here in Texas due to rodenticide poisoning and have personally had to rush a dog to an emergency clinic due to accidental ingestion (older ones have a month-long treatment, newer ones have NO ANTIDOTE!!!)

As much as I dislike rats, I completely agree with Michelle. Rodenticides are a gruesome threat to ravens, owls, cats, etc. all of whom eat rats and can be poisoned by eating a poisoned rodent. Some Rodenticides (rat poison) are anticoagulants that cause an organism to hemorrhage to death. Shooting, snapping, or electrocution is a more humane end and doesn't endanger our beneficial predators.

Greg, I used to trap pocket gophers in the spring and freeze them whole in plastic bags. Then in the winter when I taught high school zoology, I used the frozen dead gophers for taxidermy practice during the taxidermy unit on mammalogy. Most of the kids loved it and got really creative with their stuffed gophers... like the girls who made Chippendale gophers with little bow ties and g strings. I still have one of those in my study.

Not all my experiences with rodents have been negative.  We had a itinerant neighborhood hamster when I was a kid--she moved from house to house as each successive mom got tired of tracking/corralling her when she inevitably escaped.

I've thought of renting a couple of Chippendales to scare my kids...."What is she doing with the inheritance??!"   :D

I used to use a pest control service to help control the gophers and they would use poisonous bait.  I never did like the idea of that because of the reason Michelle states. And, you rarely know if you actually killed one as they would crawl off and die somewhere else if they did take the bait.  I like the positive reinforcement of actually seeing the dead critter in a trap.

Harold, I'm not nearly as creative as you and your kids were.  I simply stuff the varmint head first back in it's hole as a warning to any others.  Kind of like that scene in "The GodFather" with the horse's head!

My delicate and genteel mother used to dig up the entry of the gopher or mole holes and stuff fresh German Shepherd poop into the hole and recover it with a board. She said that the gopher would come running down the hole and slam into the poop, face first, and then move out of the neighborhood out of embarrassment. It probably didn't work, but it kept her entertained and buried some nutrients in the garden.  And there is never a shortage of German Shepherd poop...

All this talk brings to mind when our old terrier, Brandy Senior, gleefully jumped up on my daughters bed and presented her with a dead rat. Oh...memories and perhaps nightmares.
