Jim said, "Having said that I still haven't placed a freeze on my credit... I guess I'm lazy."

Yeah, me too--but I also have a blind optimism in the resurrection of inanimate objects...and that "fairy tales can come true, it can happen to you, if you are among the young at heart" & the LD has made me much younger at heart.   :D  Though I do appreciate this discussion, with all the useful information & good advice.

Jim mentioned "...congresscritters..."

What a marvelously descriptive appellation for those varmints.

Perhaps one strategy (maybe not this year but for future years) for dealing with IRS refunds is to not have one, or to have a very small refund at best.  My goal in the past has been to not give the IRS a free loan with my funds so I've always tried to come as close as possible to either zero or to having me owe the IRS a little money at the end of the year.

The bad guys out there with our info will move on to more lucrative targets, hopefully!

In reading more about ID theft I came across this scenario. Someone assumes your identity and works earning a reported income on your SSN. Then, at some point, the IRS comes to you looking for the taxes that are due. I am assuming in this case that they are either not having taxes withheld or reporting exemptions that are high enough to preclude taxes from being withheld.

In regards to the IRS I believe Todd's website mentions an IRS Pin. It's not clear to me that you can get one in this circumstance but if not it is certainly something that people could bring to their congresscritters attention. It would seem to me that this would warrant that option. Here is a link to info on that from the IRS.

The Identity Protection PIN IP PIN | Internal Revenue Service

After looking at the website, it appears that the vast majority of the U.S. population is not eligible for an IRS Pin.  They should make it available to every person who files a tax return!

Re: Jim's comments-- I think of it as "a free loan with my funds" to the "congresscritters" & follow Jim's plan...I'd rather pay them a little at the end than use them as an enforced "savings account" & be dreaming of all I'm gonna buy when I get a refund of the  money I loaned (without any interest).

Just a followup to the Equifax Trusted ID program that offers free monitoring to those potentially affected by the breach.  I had initially requested the service and was told I would receive an email to complete the process in a couple days.  Nearly a week later, I received the email which wanted me to click on a link and provide more personal info to complete the process.  I elected to pass on the offer since I am already with Credit Karma and now have monitoring with Experian, through USAA.

And be aware that fake sites are popping up trying to get your information (for those that don't already have it I guess, lol!):

I wouldn't trust these guys to do anything but be self serving.

Forgive me all for saying it here again.  If you haven't created an account with SSA, do it before someone else does.  Jmho

Thanks for that link. After reading the article it would seem just trying to check all this would be a full-time job.

I'm operating under the assumption that the IRS will issue a PIN # to anyone filling out a 14039. My advice is to do so and write "Equifax Hack" in the explanation field. (No further explanation is needed in my opinion.) You incur no fees in this process. When you efile your return there is a field in which to enter the PIN #.

Lifelock is a total waste of $ in my opinion. Signing up simply gives all of your information to yet another organization that takes money from you every month.

I would not recommend trying to change your social security number! That could turn into a nightmare by itself, instead, follow the advice on my web page.

Reviving this old thread but here is an update.  Starting tomorrow, credit freezes, lifting, and unfreezing will be free due to action taken by Congress:

Another update to the Equifax breach. You can now make a claim for 10 years of credit monitoring or $125. Guess our information isn’t worth much:

Yeah, just know that the entire world knows all our info or can find it out for about $5-$12 on all those sites that sell it including your cell phones and emails, neighbors, etc.  So many large corporate sites get hacked into it is ridiculous.  Oh, and I won't give sensitive information out to stores - not their concern and another place to be hacked.  I give just what the place really needs to do their job.

Eat Street got hacked the other day - personal info not credit card info.
However, I am now getting emails that say "hey, I know your password - in fact I know them all and I have full access to your computer......I will destroy it if you don't pay me....".  I know about this scam and the emails go into known spam, so nicely I only seem them when I scan spam looking for messages that went into there and should not have.

I stumbled across a video some time ago about a guy who phishers the phishers - when he gets one of these emails (described above), he calls them up.   But since he knows what they are doing he pretends he is trying to help but doesn't let them connect to his computer.  Since he is being so helpful, they end up allowing him to connect to theirs.  Then when they are telling him how to let them on to his computer he again pretends to go along but really throwing away all their files on the people they have phished then says yup, your files are gone, now you won't get paid for your work this week (the phisher in the video goes ballistic on him).  His video shows how to do what he does.  Not worth my trouble, but it Emphasizes...

Don't store credit card info on sites - do a one time information whenever you can.
Have a different login & password for each place you store a credit card or that is a bank/credit card site (yup a pain but important).
Consider using a 'junk' email address and a google phone number that you give out to those random companies you deal with occasionally - easy to change out that info.
I use a second email and a mailing address for reputable businesses (e.g. Drs, Banks, etc.) but if I had to I could dump that info also.
Having a little space between me and the people intending to do harm to me is a nice feeling.
And easy to spot the scammers - e.g. the email saying I have won something from a store, or there is a problem with my order or package go to an email that I don't use for reputable business.  So I don't even have to look, it is spam. No accidental first thing in the morning and tired clicking on something I should not be clicking on.

I'm posting this link for those that might not know about the proposed settlement. Our data was stolen and we have filed claims for the 10 years free monitoring. Needless to say, they should be responsible for lifetime monitoring but this is what they got away with. There are other possible options if you have been more seriously financially impacted and the details are there so read those before clicking on the file a claim link.

Far as I know, a credit freeze with the big 3 is a free option, as is unfreeze, temporary or permanent. At least, it was free for us, and pretty easy to do. However, this only protects against opening credit - if a breach has released your name, social, and address, thieves are still free to file a spoof tax return in your name. The SSA does not run credit checks.

Two things
1. Today the credit freeze is free.  <smile> of course that was after I gave each credit reporting agency  $$$ (yes all four) for both my wife and I.
2.  SSA does a behind the scene check when you first set up a log on to their web page.   When you try to setup your account they check a credit reporting agency.   If it (your account) is frozen you can not set up a log on with out going to a  physical SSA office.
3. (I know I said only two) . Under the new Federal Tax law the IRS has to assume a more attitude of the honesty of the tax payer.    I.E. the tax payer is telling the truth until the IRS proves the tax payer is not.

Great, since my goal is to owe the IRS a little money every year, the thieves can pay my taxes from now on!  ;)
