Stegosaurus - GPS - Waze August 22, 2017, 03:35:43 pm We call our GPS Glenda. Actually, we have several other names for her, but…what I want to carp about it are the road names the GPS displays. Garmin greatly prefers to use vanity names, rather than the actual name of the road. For example, turn right on Main Street or Bob Evans Parkway when the street is really a numbered highway. But this one “takes the cake”. She refers to US40 as Stegosaurus Fwy. It is the highway east from Vernal to Dinosaur. 1 Likes

While Antrodemus valens was first described by Leidy in 1870 from half of a tail vertebra, later paleontologists concluded that this was really Just Another Allosaurus. Thus, the "Antrodemus" genus that Leidy proposed is no longer widely used. So it really should be "Allosaurus Alley," which sounds better anyway. :-)(Sorry, couldn't resist! My father was a paleontologist, and I grew up playing around the base of an Antrodemus/Allosaurus skeleton at the natural history museum he curated.) 6 Likes

Waze does not necessarily work well for the people who live and work along the 'shortcuts' suggested by Waze. My street (and a couple streets adjacent) is often used as one of those 'alternate routes'; cars zoom around the corner and down the street, often at high rates of speed, intent on their destinations and seemingly oblivious to anything else.If you use Waze or any other alternate route finder, please remember that residential (or commercial) neighborhoods that you cut through are populated with vehicles, people, and animals; slow down and pay attention. 2 Likes

It is great at routing you efficiently, but will choose streets not appropriate for a motor home. In a normal vehicle it is a wonderful example of the benefits of crowdsourcing information, including the user's. You have to trust it and obey it though. I like apple maps because they work with my watch to give me a little tap when it is time to turn, but Apple is still behind Google IMO. When the route is tricky we turn to Google Maps on one iPhone, and Copilot on the other. None of them does well with names of highways, but most people don't seem to either, unless they are Californians. The only place I know where hiway numbers are "The 101", "The 5", etc.
Re: Stegosaurus - GPS - Waze Reply #10 – August 23, 2017, 01:42:17 pm We like the Waze for traffic/road hazard advisories, but have found that it isn't as up-to-date on secondary and less-traveled roads for concerns like construction and road closures. Google Maps is much more reliable for those (I have no idea why Waze, owned by Google, wouldn't have the same current info as Google Maps). For a coach, though, we prefer a combination of RV or truck GPS and previewing a new route online via Google Maps and street view.

WAZE took us through downtown Baltimore (think 'The Wire') on day during rush hour DC traffic. Sure it might have saved a few minutes, but I'd never want to do that in our Lazy Daze. In the LD, I probably would have found a rest area and waited it out. We've basically abandoned traditional GPS in the cars, but we keep a traditional GPS in the LD because we're sometimes without cell signal.Know the tools, and use the right one for the job.Rich'03 MB in NC

Someone in NY asked where I was "from in the South?" I was quite startled by such a question--"Thuh South? Ah'm not from thuh South...Ah'm from Missouruh" never realizing back then how South that sounded (of course, there is disagreement within the state as to pronunciation--Missouruh or Missouree.When I got to Mizzou most of my dorm floor was from St. Louis & I gave up "pop" for "soda."Language is a wonderful thing, and it's sometimes a real trip to see how difficult English can be for native speakers...especially when trying to communicate with another native English speaker. Being born and raised in the south I've 'lost' most of my south talk. DW says when I'm very tried you can hear the south peeking thru.

Unless you can count crossing the Niagara River to see the falls from the other side, a trip of at least 75 miles from his home. He doesn't like Airplanes, Tunnels or Bridges, go figure!
