Car Dolly and Enterprise Car Rental
We are wanting to get a Car Dolly to pull our 2013 Honda Civic. We have a 2006 30ft LD Ann Ed IB Rig. Any suggestions what kind to get?? And does anyone have a Car Dolly to sell??
Thanks Sandra

Have you researched this much?
Car dollys are a real PIA to deal with, hard to load and then you have another thing to park at the campsite or at home.
Many times, parking the dolly has to be done by hand, are you strong enough to do this?
I know of no one who uses a dolly anymore, everyone flat tows.
The dolly adds a lot of weight, that has to be pulled. 31' models are already weigh challenged.

My suggestion is to sell the Civic and find a CRV, or other towable vehicle, to replace it.
Either way, it's expensive, you only want to do this once.

If you still want to do this, rent a dolly from U-Haul and give it a try before spending the money on a dolly.
You might change your mind.

." 31' models are already weigh challenged."

Your rig picture looks like the Anniversary Edition. If so, that unit has the lowest CCC of any recently built Lazy Daze.

We looked into renting a tow dolly once. It weighed 750#. Add to that the weight of your car and you're pushing the 4,000# figure.

From the U Haul site about their tow dolly.

Max Load: 3,450 lbs. when towing a front-wheel drive vehicle, 3,900 lbs. when towing a rear-wheel drive vehicle.
Empty weight: 750 lbs.

Your "13 Civic should be towable, eh? Don't get a dolly. You'll regret it.

Thanks for all the good information. No, Chris our Honda Civic cannot be towed. We do not want to buy another car. We have rented Cars from Enterprise through our discount with Costco and they deliver the car to us free, so I guess we will just keep doing that-

I looked at Civic but read CR-V, which, I believe still could be towed in '13.

Judie, If you are a Costco Member in their travel (you can do it on line) department you get a discount on renting cars. And Enterprise Car Rental will bring you the Car, pick you up and take you to their office to do the paper work. Free! Then you bring back the Car, and they will drive you back to your RV, Free.  They do not charge you extra for the Car Rental for this service.  There is no minimum amount of days. So if we go to a place to Camp for 1 week and it is more practical to go places with a Car we rent one from Enterprise for 3 days. Most times it is not that expensive to rent a small economical Car. It just makes it even more economical when getting the Costco discount and I can't remember how much that is?

Before we had a toad, we used Enterprise and Hertz to bring cars to campgrounds, if they were within a certain distance.
I have used the same services at home when one of our vehicles will be inoperative for several days and we need a rental.
It's best to make reservation, to get the best price and to make sure a car is available when you need it.
There are times when a rental is cheaper than pulling a toad long distances, considering the decrease in the LD's mileage and wear and tear on both the LD and toad. I find it more enjoyable to drive without a toad and don't always take it.

Thank you for this good information.  This sounds almost like enough incentive to join Costco even though it is 160 miles RT for us to visit the store.  We don't tow now - I drive our Sportsmobile campervan separately - but we are wanting to be in the same vehicle during travel times now.  I will look into these options anon.

It has been quite a few years since we rented a car from Enterprise. However, back then they would pick you up and drop you off at no additional charge. Perhaps they don't do that any longer.

This is the Costco page referred to in the above posts:

Enterprise Rent-A-Car? at Costco Travel

Before I joined Costco specifically for the purpose of potentially renting a car from Enterprise, I'd investigate any coupons/"deals" from Enterprise itself and also check the various coupon websites to see what's available. I've rented cars from Enterprise several times, and there was always some sort of "discount" available.

Enterprise does pick you up at your location and take you to their office to do the paperwork. You pick up the car, "goseedo", turn in the car, and they deliver you back to the location. Easy, convenient, and not expensive, particularly if one gets a little run-around vehicle.

Note: Smaller Enterprise locations often have limited choices of cars; I once had to take a "mid-size" but paid the "compact" rate because that's what I had reserved.

"It's best to make reservation, to get the best price and to make sure a car is available when you need it...
...There are times when a rental is cheaper than pulling a toad long distances..."

I had made reservations for our Enterprise rental several weeks prior to our trip to Yellowstone. Per Enterprises advice, I called them 48 hours prior to picking up the car to guarantee that our choice of vehicle would be waiting for us...it was.

Our rental paid for itself by the end of our 7 day stay in Yellowstone. It averaged 40 mpg and compared to the LD'a 9.8 mpg the cost for fuel and ease of travel (and parking roadside for photo op's) made the rental a win-win all around.

Total cost through Costco/Enterprise was $241 very close to what it would have cost in fuel for the LD if we had driven it the equivalent miles in the park.

It made perfect sense for us. The LD stayed put and we made great time through the sometimes crowed roads. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I've used Enterprise many times over the last few years but always check prices on Kayak.com
Occasionally another company is running a special and you can always ask Enterprise to match it.

I today had occasion to book a rental car for a week in Indianapolis on a last minute trip next week. At Enterprise's own website, the cheapest price, after all the add-on fees and taxes, was nearly $450!!  I went to Costco's travel service and had several choices, all in the low $200's, and settled on a Focus for $209 all in, from Budget. I'm a long time Costco member, but had never used their travel services. Thanks to this forum for a timely reminder today of this option. -- Jon

Prior to booking our Enterprise rental through Costco, I checked out AAA. Costco/Enterprise saved me nearly $200.00 over AAA and Hertz.

Live and learn...sometimes you have to think on your feet and act fast.

And when it comes to rental bargains...it seems that the early bird saves the most. My Enterprise booking agent told me that waiting till the last minute could increase the rental rate significantly.

We rented a car from enterprise for our recent trip to Mammoth area, it was the perfect solution for running around as we don't have a toad set up yet. My outback is able to be flat towed so long term we will probably get a tow bar etc, but until then we drive 2 vehicles for the local trips and will rent for the far off destinations.

A word of caution, I'm not sure the enterprise at mammoth airport will pick you up. There seems to be all of 1 employee! Oh and our compact reservation became a Ford f 150 because it was the only car they had after a customer wrecked the compact. It was awesome other than the gas mileage.

Yes,  it is still Free pick up and when you return they drive you back to your Rig Free. What is nice that has happened a few times they don't have the car we reserved but give us a better one for the same price as the smaller one we reserved.
I think we will just continue renting a car and forget towing.

And remember, Enterprise was founded by a Navy pilot and named after the WWII aircraft carrier!  The company is very supportive of our military members and families, and veterans:
