Another Project for OCD Owners
This morning I painted  the escape hatch cover (white satin enamel) which has taken a beating from 8 years of bugs to falling tree limbs.  We also painted the black molding around the rear tire skirts, which were showing some sun fade.  I don't know how long that paint job will last, but it looks better right now.  And the yellow paint looks great against the blue and white paint of the LD.  (OK ... black paint).

In addition, the painted caulking between the front cab steps and the side of the LD was black from road grime.  So I used a small tooth brush to clean the grime and some of the blue paint came off too.  Margee and I found a nearly perfect paint match at a local craft store, which we'll use tomorrow.  After it dries, I'll use some clear coat to seal it.  None of these projects are worthy of an uploaded picture, but they sure do give us some satisfaction to know we're doing our best with our rolling home.

I have always used  a couple "coats" of 303 on these moldings around the fender skirts, wiped on with a rag. Cleans, protects from the sun, preserves the material.  ;)

Turns out the perfect paint match wasn't as perfect as we wanted.  At least that area is now protected from the elements.  So today I called Lazy Daze and ordered both shades of blue for our '09, which will cost $32.20 and includes tax and shipping.  The letter and check are in the mail.

And that's what I did for our rolling home today.

I'd be interested in photos of the color match of the paint...  I assume it's cans of brush-on paint, and not the unshippable spray cans?
Or perhaps will you be spraying it on when you get it?

Hello Chip.  I asked customer service at LD and she said it was paint that requires a brush, but I didn't ask what size of paint.  (My omission.)  We have just a few spots that need the factory blue paint to include the joint as describe above, a spot of rust on the rear fender, and a few other spots.  I have some clear coat that came with the Ford Oxford White that we used on a few places like the hood of the truck (road debris).  That Ford paint was just excellent and after using the clear coat, the touch-ups are invisible.

DW will do the blue paint touch-up and I'll do the clear coat.  Once we're done, I'll attempt a picture.

The last time I bought touch up paint they sold two bottles. One of the color and the other of the hardener. Is that what you got or are they not doing that anymore?

If they are still using the two-stage color/hardener I'm not sure what benefit is added by clear coating over it although I guess it couldn't hurt.

Toad got doinked in a parking lot.

Bought some touch up paint. There was a base coat, the color and the clear coat, no hardener.

I did a mediocre job but it was a minimal scratch so not the worst thing in the world. I would counsel practice in an inconspicuous spot.

Most automotive paints have been what is called two-stage for many years which is a base coat/clear coat. There are some 3 stage as well. They don't use a hardener because they aren't the same type of paint that LD uses. LD uses a polyurethane paint which contains the color and a hardener. Unless, of course, that has all changed at LD.

Nope. Just bought some last week. 2 stage. But they are changing. There are different catalysts between colors and white.

And the new white they are using has finally changed tint to my faded white.

Oh. I have never been more frustrated with paint as I have had with the 50 year gold run around. I've asked for it on numerous occasions  and been told numerous excuses. Or obscene prices and gallon minimums. Cardinal diesnt recognize the part number.

Last week they  miraculously had numerous bottles of gold. I was ecstatic. Only to be crushed. They had separated and solidified while on the shelf.  They had all gone bad in one week. Vince swears he checked them the week before that!!!  Bah!

Lydia, do you mean it doesn't match?

Thanks, Lydia. We gave up on ever getting a match for the gold. We tried all the automotive paints LD suggested plus others. We had an automotive paint store mix paint to match which wasn't close. Plus I would be surprised if the original matched given the fading of the metallic gold.

Chris,

Yup doesnt "match" on close inspection.  We got nailed by a semi trailer in a rest stop on the 99 a year ago or so now... The factory did the repair and repainted the upper rear street side panel... on first pass you cant tell, but if you turn and have light at the right angle, the original white is "greyer" to my eyes than the new paint...

It took quite some time out in the sun to do that so Im not too upset... Now I know that I have to start saving up for a full paint job.. That way, when she needs it I just might have enough  :D

JIm,

we did too. the years that passed dickering with the factory on the paint made me very upset with them.. This months episode is just too much. I spent time trying to make my own. I am convinced its the amount ant type of flake in the suspension that does it... They wouldnt sell me nor give me the dried up paint  because Ed would get upset.

I know someone with mint green white... they wouldnt fix that either.. so why would they care about the dried up gold not matching? I could just smack my forehead forever and never know.

Lydia, I think you're pretty safe from any wrath unless there's a medium involved in the process!  ;)

I have to laugh Lydia. I have one of the 1998 mint green white. And with the red it really is obviously a minty green. I've come to actually love it. It's individual and I always recognize immediately my fellow 1998 eras. I recently purchased new awning material it's called burgundy fade, and it's actually white so the new awnings and the awning material arms up against minty white makes it even more obvious. It's funny how some people do a double take when they really look at it and go what's wrong with your white? Again I've come to love it

I was thinking of you above. I was amazed by the whole situation when you told me. As a customer oriented perfectionist I can't believe they didn't fix it way back when. But being restricted by emissions yearly didn't even come across my radar.

loving our LD too

As mentioned above, we ordered the touch-up paint from the Factory about 2 weeks ago and it arrived today.   A dark blue Dupont paint (#892448EX), a light blue Dupont paint (#92447EX) and a Dupont paint activator.  So the turn around time was not bad considering we mailed a letter with a check and then the Factory mailed us the paint.

The paint didn't come with any instructions so I've got to determine the ratio of paint to activator and the best temperature range for mixing and apply the paint.  I'll probably give the Factory a call next week for some guidance.

Once we use the paint, we'll take some pictures of the touch-up and post them but only if it turns out.  ;)

According to the Factory, the ratio is 3:1 just in case anyone else has a need to know.  We're waiting for a bit cooler weather to use this touch-up paint.

Oh. Mix it in glass.  It will eat through some plastics. I found a set of miniture stainless steel measuring spoons and the base of a candle holder I think. Tooth picks and finer paint brushes are best.

Good luck.

This morning, Margee and I finally found the time to visit our LD in storage and to use the Factory touch-up paint.   The small project went very well.  We made a small batch, which was a good idea because it sets up rather quickly.  We used a good quality small artist brush and the paint flowed on nicely.  We also touched up a few other nicks and such that just seem to accumulate all by themselves.  Our Home on Wheels is much happier today than yesterday.
