Gas Prices - Dropping Like a Rock

We filled up the LD yesterday for $1.86 gal. at Costco in Fort Worth. Recently, we were at $2.12 at the same place. Some financial websites have suggested this trend could continue for awhile longer because of excess inventories. Cheap gas and cheap Diet Coke ... two of my favorites.

And don't buy sodas in some cities. It's either taxed to death or illegal. Jeesh!

Cheap near ethanol plants. Reached $1.38 last year and took a pic thinking it was a low (yes, so far).

Here's the rub: OPEC used to be able to control prices. Now, they try to lower prices and suddenly all those fracking sites in USA can turn the spigot back on once it reaches a price they can make money (having shut off when prices dropped). Not only that but fracking techniques used to be you drilled sideways four ways. Now you can splinter off 24 ways to find deposits. just think where the technology will be in a couple more years.

In economics the most frightening words are "this time it's different" but this time it's different. Our group is telling folks oil will bounce between $40 to $60 for the foreseeable future. Get your reservations well in advance in parks cause there are gonna be more and more RV'ers.

Always more in CA, but getting better: I filled up on Monday at the Costco in San Jose for $2.45 for regular. And checking Gas Buddy today, I see it's now down to 2.39 :-) not bad for CA (especially Bay Area!)

Still about $3.00 at most "top tier" stations in/around SJ, but better tnan the $3.40-$3.50 87 octane was a couple weeks ago. At least it's not $5.10 per gallon like propane at the Suburban supplier! 😳

Still $2.97 at my closest station. Can get it for $2.65 if I was to drive a few miles away.

Here in Louisiana it's at or just below $2.00 despite our governor's efforts at trying to get another $0.17 gas tax to go towards our bad roads infrastructure. Only the new monies were NOT dedicated to roads....so it failed and now we're enjoying lower gas prices.

yea -- its time to party like it's 1984. I still remember an interview I did for a TV station. I said once gas hits $1.00 a gallon all of a sudden oil will be found all over the place. The more I ponder energy prices the more I know there is a lot I don't know.

I still find it so interesting that while we all need petroleum based fuels and we're using more of it all the time, scientists, engineers and others can't definitively explain how it's created. In fact, as you may have read or heard, the so called 20 year old "dry wells" in West Texas once again have oil deposits and are producing. There is so much we really don't know about Mother Earth.

I think the reason is improved technology. Back in my real early days working in the "oil patch" there was talk of lots of oil but it was unrecoverable with the days technology and related costs. As technology has improved there are truly old "dry" wells that are able to produce again. The oil was always there but not economically recoverable. But and it is an important but, oil production is related to oil prices. At a certain price point it no longer remains a profitable business in some oil fields.
My entire career was in the oil and natural gas fields. But I've always held the belief that we should be doing R&D on alternative energy. But I feel it should be done with a partnership between gov't and business. Even if electric cars become the predominant vehicle on our highways there are many products that will continue to use oil as a base stock.

I noticed yesterday that the prices have been dropping in our area as well (Tehachapi). I usually fill up at our local ARCO which has dropped to $2.59.

On another note, we have another player coming into our market soon. Should be a good option for RVers as well. Competition is good!

With my 2017 Chevy Volt I'm on electric most of the time so rarely put gas in it and just ignore the gas stations. However, with the LD I have to switch back to my old ways and follow the gas prices again. They tend to stay high in Boise. And I'll have to put in a plug for the Volt - "Car of the Future".

We were seriously considering buying a Tesla, and were actually on the waiting list for the new Model 3 before deciding to cancel our reservation. We ultimately settled for a Subaru Outback which we felt would better meet our needs at this point in our lives. That being said, fully electric autos are upon us and will soon be the norm. I anticipate our next vehicle will be electric, hopefully a pickup. Talk about torque!

That's right. The Love's is always jam-packed with cars and semi's. The new Flying J will provide some relief for travelers, as well as a couple of new dining options for our area (Wendy's and Cinnabon) and will right across 58 from Love's.

I'd love to buy an electric car but first there has to be more charging stations. We ran in to a couple charging their new Tesla at Topas Lake this June. They told us they loved the car but had to really plan out their trip as to where they could charge up. They had to sit and wait (2 hrs) before continuing on. 🙃

Larry, is that the Lee Vining Chevron? Has to be the highest price differential to nearby stations I can recall. I plan my 395 drives to fill either side of that place. GasBuddy app is one of my travel necessities. Chevron whenever possible. And I see a tendency that when there is a Shell station, there is a nearby Chevron. The two may have hired the same development team sometime.

Paid $1.95 in KC metro last week...still at $1.99 here in Chillicothe. Missouri has the third lowest gas tax in the nation at $.17, and our GOP legislature voted against sending a ballot proposal to the voters that would have raised it a measly $.06 in 2018--it was last raised in 1996. With the seventh largest road system in the country & over 10,000 bridges (860 in *poor condition* & more than 1300 with weight restrictions), not only do they not have the backbone to address the problem, they don't trust the voters either.

Tesla is quickly increasing the number of their Super Chargers in anticipation of the Model 3 rollout, which apparantly is ahead of schedule. This from CNN Money:

Tesla in the spotlight: Tesla (TSLA) shares could be in focus Monday after CEO Elon Musk boasted on Twitter that production of the highly anticipated Model 3 vehicle would start this week. The first customers should take delivery on July 28. Hundreds of thousands of customers have put down deposits to buy the Model 3, Tesla's first mass market vehicle. Musk has been working for years to create an affordable electric vehicle.

Just stayed at a Holiday Inn Express in Ogallala Nebraska. This is about halfway between Omaha and Denver (a bit closer to Denver). They told me to park in back and when I drove around the corner I came across 10 to 12 Tesla charging stations.

I took a picture of about half of them but can't figure how to attach while surfing on my phone.

Oh, electric cars are coming. They are most certainly coming.

Edit: Still a working stiff and do a fair amount of windshield time on the company dime. Thus, hotels. I'm actually a Marriott guy. Gold status. Yes, I need to follow the mantra, Camp more, Work less.

My only question is why you were staying in a Motel in Ogallala when Lake McConaughy with fantastic camping is so close. If you do stay on the lake however, I suggest you don't try fishing unless you have a Nebraska license. I did, just catch and release, but was spotted by a Nebraska F&W ranger from across the lake. He came over to see my license. We had quite a discussion as I showed him my Washington license and told him I believed there should be reciprocal agreements between states at least for us old guys and he pretty much agreed. The smallmouth fishing was great, but told him I was strickly catch and release. He asked to look in my refrigerator and finding nothing he let me off the hook with a warning. I still believe there should be that reciprocal agreement between states, kinda like driving.
