Pet Crate - Where Do You Put It?
Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to "get out of Dodge" in my Lazy Daze from Las Cruces, NM.  I'm trying to wait for a "window of opportunity" when the weather isn't over 100 degrees, and plan to travel early in the day.  I'm planning to attend a ukulele festival mid-July in Bend, Oregon, and eventually visit British Columbia.

Some of you know that I lost my beloved terrier-mix Calamity Jane (a.k.a. Cali) at the end of February in Mexico.  She was 15 1/2, and I never thought I'd have another dog.  However, I finally realized that while I couldn't do anything regarding the loss of my beloved rescue I could move on and give a needy dog a "fur-ever" home.

Enter "Luna" (formerly Allison), a year old rescue found on the streets of El Paso, TX.  I had asked about another dog at the El Paso Animal Rescue League on Petfinder, but found she had been adopted.  However, the representative sent me a text with the picture of a dog they just received.  She's about a year old, and while her records say poodle mix, I think she's more Havanese or Maltese.

As they say, the "rest is history."   :)

Luna has a 18 X 24 inch crate that she's adapted well to.  She stays in her crate if I'm away from the house for short periods, and sleeps there.  I'm just wondering a "good" place to put the crate in my Lazy Daze.  I'm "thinking" since it's just me, I'll put it underneath the table in the booth.  I have a 12-volt outlet underneath on one side that I can also run a fan.

Any other suggestions from those who travel with a dog crate?

Thanks,
Cheryl

Luna is soooo cute. You are both lucky to have found each other. Happy travels to the both of you. Sorry no crate suggestions. My dad just lets his dog (Cedar) ride along.

Hi Cheryl,

My wife and I travel with 2 60 pound labs. We've found that having crate-trained dogs makes traveling much easier. When we've used a crate, we've placed it wherever convenient. Between the couches in the rear when traveling. In the kitchen area at night. Our suggestion is to experiment and you'll discover what best works for you.
Have fun with you new pup

Our 85 lb Chloe has three 29" x 48" crates at this point.  One each  for the house, car, and RV.  We purchased a folding cloth crate for RV traveling.  Initially the crate was placed on the dinette bed.  She currently sleeps in the MB king with us, uncrated.   It is carried on long distance travel for motel room use per "crate the dog" rules.

We have a dog with a similar sized crate.  It usually sits between the couches in the back of the MB.  Very occasionally we put it under the dinette table.

I prefer the back since I can open the bathroom door and block his view of whatever is out the front window.  It also keeps people who probably have good intentions but don't know much about RVs from worrying when they see a dog inside the vehicle.

I run an endless breeze fan from the TV 12v outlet when needed, as well as the fantastic fan overhead with the thermostat.

That is a small dog crate.  I like the idea of keeping it under the table.  That is also a good location for when you're underway, if you stop fast it does not come flying forward.   We have a small poodle mix (17#) and a Standard Poodle.  When we travel with them I pull the shades down in back and shut off the area with the bathroom door.  There is room for water.  With the shades down they are less likely to bark - no visual stimulus to set them off.

We have a Chiweenie and a Shih Tzu mix, both rescues. They ride on the couch in crates with the safety belts looped through the bars. I didn't want the worry of the crates going flying if we were in an accident. Also we like to keep them upfront near the air conditioner where we can see if they are getting too hot.

The love and gratitude you will receive from a rescue dog is unlike any other.

Just a note of caution about driving with the bathroom door in the open position. I once did that to keep my cats in the back while I was driving, and the left drawer below the wardrobe came open blocking the bathroom door from going closed. I could move the door only a fraction of an inch and it took quite a bit of effort to use whatever I could that would fit in that small space to nudge the drawer bit by bit until the door could clear it and I could once again gain entrance to the back.

Hi John,

I'm leaning toward putting the crate under the table.  Even though some folks have put the crate in the passenger seat and/or on one of the rear sofas I feel this is a more secure place.  If there's just a little extra space for me to put my legs and sit at the table with my laptop it will be perfect...

Thanks,
Cheryl

Cheryl,
We have a German Shepherd and my daughter's 70lb. Boxer/? mix puppy.  We do exactly as David Harris does for placement and it works well.  Big dogs are a PITA in a RV, but we wouldn't know how to travel without them.

Congrats on your new family addition-she is a cutie. That is really a small crate...especially traveling for hours/days in it. We are Professional Pet Sitters and most dogs your dogs size really use the next size or two bigger??? They need to be able to stand up and turn around easily plus room for their baby and chew toy or bone? We travel with our Boston Terriers ( 3 of them) and our almost 2 year old Poppy who weighs 18 lbs goes up by us in her Crate up behind/between the Drivers/Passenger Seats; we have a gate in the back that the other two stay in the bedroom/bath area loose. We have a 30ft LD IB.
Putting the Crate under the Kitchen Table sounds good. Also be careful with a fan directly on her she can get sick. Fern is right about the Bathroom door we always keep it closed for the Dogs in the Bedroom. Happy Traveling, Bend Oregon is such a great town.

Hey our daughters name is Luna! We only carry a soft collapsible crate on the moho, they're only crated when there's a real need to confine them so I don't have a permanent solution. We have used it a few times, usually in the back between the couches under the table. If we're parked I've squeezed it between the two front seats, a benefit of the soft sided style and a smaller dog!

A day or so ago a lady towing a travel trailer behind her SUV lost control after the trailer began to fishtail.  Both SUV and trailer ended up on their sides.  She had a small dog with her that ran out onto the freeway after the crash and fortunately was captured by a passerby.  When my dog travels with me in my car (and someday motorhome), she always has a harness on and is latched with a leash to something.  I'm not worried about her jumping out in general, it's if something bad happens and the fear factor kicks in.  It's not a guarantee she will not be able to run off, but at least I tried...

Not sure if this link will work to the article on the crash.

My dog's crate is held in place with a seat belt when traveling in the Lazy Daze. When in the car he wears a harness which is attached to the seat belt. In case of an accident I don't want him to be a flying object or get out of my vehicle.

My basenji crate travelled strapped in on the most forward dinette seat in my SOB FD.

In my 24 FL LD, I swapped the chairs for (front to back) a 42" SUV crate for my beauceron, a small varikennel for my basenji, and my stressless recliner & ottoman.

Since we can't turn off the airbag in the passenger seat, I would never travel with a dog in that seat, anymore than I would a baby.
