Re: Unusual RV Reply #10 – April 07, 2017, 07:57:23 pm If you're going to be in the area or traveling through, The RV Hall of Fame in Elkhart, Indiana, has some unusual and interesting RVs from days long gone by. I won't say one should build an entire trip around this place, but if in the area and the timing is right, it's quite interesting. Plan for about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending upon how fast you read the small print on the displays! You won't find any Lazy Dazes there. There is free dry camping in their paved lot and it is reasonably level. We were there one October-November evening several years ago. After the civic center closes its doors for the night, it's very quiet. Felt safe.TinaP2006 MB "Wild Thing"...snow is melting in Maine, finally 2 Likes

Re: Unusual RV Reply #15 – April 14, 2017, 09:34:00 pm When I was about 10 years old my Great-Uncle Mack (Grampa's brother) converted an old 50's Buick into an RV. Almost put Grampa's eye out in the process when Grampa got a little too close to the action.Prior to Uncle Mack's start on the RV, we had a pretty sweet tree house my Dad had built for us kids. Even the dog liked climbing up into it. Uncle Mack was extremely resourceful and knew a good thing when he saw it. He also knew a gullible and trusting kid with two strong arms when he saw that too. "Your Dad says he wants you to tear down that ol' tree house, Gregg", Uncle Mack told my brother.By the time I had gotten home from school the tree house was gone and the RV had its basic frame work done. So much for our tree house. Clever Uncle Mack.He finished his rig in no time and did a bang up job on it. Maybe twenty foot long with a side entry door and most of the comforts of home. What a guy. He stored it in our back yard for a while and I loved sneaking inside while no one was around and stealing a small swig from his little jug of corn whiskey (kids!).Uncle Mack had a small used car lot in town (long before my time). I have no doubt he was the first guy to sell ice to an Eskimo. Sure do miss him. Here's a shot of his little car lot.Kent 3 Likes
Re: Unusual RV Reply #16 – April 15, 2017, 10:41:20 am I'm not so sure this next RV fits the catagory of unusual, or out of the ordinary, but it is certainly COOL.If the Mother-In-Law is traveling along or you need a place for small base camp or sleeping quarters for the kids, this next conversion could easily fit the bill.https://youtu.be/AH-0KcvZ5jII kinda like it.Kent 3 Likes

Re: Unusual RV Reply #19 – June 18, 2017, 12:01:14 am Now that is a classic. If I'm not mistaken, there is a newly restored TT that looks very similar to this one in a trailer park across the road from Serrano CG at Big Bear Lake. It is an absolute stunner. Looks very similar to the TT in Lucille Ball's film "The Long Long Trailer".https://youtu.be/U6dNuMGaV2kThese trailers made nice homes in Trailer Parks. I always wanted to live in a trailer park. Maybe one day. As soon as I pick up one of these classic beauties.https://youtu.be/wToCX2ViLjYWith a little elbow grease, maybe I could clean one up to look like this...https://youtu.be/4Z9RaivWTKQWell maybe a lot of elbow grease.Kent 2 Likes
Re: Unusual RV Reply #20 – June 18, 2017, 12:42:23 am For what it's worth, Wikipedia has a very informative entry about "The Long, Long Trailer." Quoting:"The trailer used in the film is the 1953 36-foot Redman "New Moon" model, which sold for $5,345 (equal to $47,846 today) at the time. The new car used to tow the trailer is a 1953 Mercury Monterey convertible with a 125 HP flathead V8 engine." 4 Likes
Re: Unusual RV Reply #21 – June 18, 2017, 01:19:29 am Thanks Andy,"The Long Long Trailer" is one my all time favourite films. I no doubt saw it on television unless it was a theatrical reboot at a local theatre when I was a kid.It has a prominent place in my laserdisc collection. I watch it at least once a year, although I do put the fast forward button to good use when Nicky is tearing the car port to pieces. For some reason, I just can't look. 😖https://youtu.be/IYK9xz8UmCUNow where did I put that remote?Kent 5 Likes

Re: Unusual RV Reply #24 – July 20, 2017, 02:36:03 pm Saw this today and thought it could be a useful toad...an all electric VW Van. I am a bit concerned with the use of lead acid batteries for a storage medium as they seem to be inside the living area (hopefully they are well vented to the outdoors). I hope the creator can transition away from them soon.Still a sweet way to put an old VW to use in the 21st century.https://youtu.be/fGZ1zbqAGA0Kent 1 Likes
