California Travel Plans
So just read this interesting article and was wondering if the looming gas tax increase will affect your upcoming travel plans?  Those of you that live elsewhere and were thinking of visiting our fair (or should I say fare?) state, would it make you think twice?

California gas tax very unpopular with voters, poll finds | The Tribune

And please, we all have our own beliefs and preferences but let's try to keep politics out of it!

Greg--

Whenever I get around to coming back that way, I will consider the tax I pay on the gas I buy just doing my part to appreciate what's there.   Our hardheaded legislature in Missouri prides itself on the low gas tax (#47 in the nation, last adjusted in 1996--only Oklahoma/S. Carolina/Alaska are lower) while our roads (especially I-70) & bridges are crumbling...the legislature here wants something (good infrastructure) for nothing.  Kansas has gotten worse as I've gone back & forth to Denver in the past few years, but I really see the difference from MO/KS when I get to Colorado (whether it's road & bridges or parks or whatever, are all much better).  I'm blest to be able to go when/where I want...& having my own bed/bathroom/refrigerator in the LD makes the gas tax worth it.   ;D

Safe traveling to all this summer.

As a 4th generation Californian, I love this state and love traveling around it...but I hate the poor roads.
As for an extra twelve cents a gallon, I doubt if I will notice it, the price of gas can change that much in just a couple days.
I well remember paying nearly $5 a gallon a few years back. Today's gas prices seem much more reasonable, even with a tax increase.  As mentioned many times before, this isn't a cheap lifestyle.

I won't change travel plans due to the gas taxes around the country. Nor due to increased bbl prices on the markets. I use the roads and own the oil stocks.

But I will grumble about how the money I pay, public and private, is spent!

Someone once said taxes are the price of civilization.    When combined with you get what you pay for, this explains most if not all the issues around the taxes.   When I look around high tax places generally have a higher standard of living then low tax places.  Taxes for public infrastructure spread the cost around making it cheaper for all users.

I'm a very firm believer that the generation that want's something should be the generation that pays for it.    Will I be  happy to pay the taxes, really you need to ask the question, but I will be happy to use the new and updated roads, bridges,  and waterways.

As for travel to and thru California -- there are a few places of highway I'd wish California would address -- I'm looking at you 580 and 880.

Is I-5 done between LA and SF? Last trip up that stretch 3 yrs ago severely challenged LD's sealant program.

I think I-5 construction is an ongoing thing, Chris.  We'll be heading that way next month so will let you know what we see.

580 is much better. Can't tell you about 880 don't use it that often.

I-5 has extremely heavy traffic, it's the main north to south truck route.
It will always be under construction, with the some of the worse parts going over the Grapevine, north of Los Angeles.
Mix a seismically active area, with tens of thousands semi-trucks and trailers daily,  and you will have rough roads.
Our LD has been over it dozens of times and is still holding together. Not sure about the driver and passenger.

I was amazed last July.  Not much trouble getting out of LA late afternoon & spent the night at Coalinga.  Drove north on I-5 the next day in stop-n-go from just north of Coalinga to well north of Sacramento.  After decades of driving in the LA area, I really don't mind driving in traffic, but this was very wearing!  Probably also had something to do with the fact that the cab AC was not working.

So we were delighted to stumble across Woodson RV park, just east of Corning and literally on the banks of the Sacramento River.  It was so nice we stayed over a second night.  Highly recommend it!  Especially after I-5 traffic.   :)

Put 1800 miles on a rental car in Cali in June.  We were on 5, 99, 101, 1 (where open) and some other roads.  I can't remember any particularly bad spots (at least compared to the rest of the country).

A point of curiosity here... when you said you stayed at "Woodson RV Park" were you talking about the Woodson Bridge RV Park on the south side of that road or did you mean to say the Woodson Bridge State Recreation Area just east of there but on the north side of the road?

The RV park is ancient, run down, ragged and hardly more than a Gypsy Camp. The State Recreation Area is quite another story. The SRA is a wonderfully quiet, shaded refuge, even in the heat of the upper valley in summer. I much prefer it to the other place.   :o
