Re: Banner Photos Reply #3 – April 23, 2017, 09:42:33 pm Re: The Current Banner photo with the string of LDs lined up parallel with the railroad tracks...I haven't seen any explanation of what, where and why this photo is significant to Lazy Daze history. Here's what I have heard through the grapevine long long ago. There is a very deep canyon in Mexico called Copper Canyon. It is the wintering ground for Monarch Butterfly's. About the only way to get there is by rail. I believe I have seen a photo, probably taken after this one, wherein all those RVs are to be seen loaded on flat cars pending a trip into Copper Canyon.I also understand that these 'rail tours' are no longer available.Anyone out there that can confirm the rumors?

Must have looked impressive, heading down the road. Brother/Uncle Paul was the wagon master.I think this photo is on the wall, next to the entry door, at the Mothership. The Copper Canyon rail trips were suspended years ago, a trip we really wanted to take.Larry

As part of that effort, we went down to the LD factory to scan and photograph some of their history. LD had four scrapbooks in the office and many pictures on the walls. With the Newtons' permission, we spent a couple days scanning and photographing. Besides Caravan trip snapshots, there were clipped newspaper articles and sales brochures. It was fascinating to see the evolution of the Caravan Club from the earliest days. The early caravans were mostly weekend events with many families with young children.Art 2 Likes
Re: Banner Photos Reply #7 – April 24, 2017, 11:07:13 am "... parked in Afton canyon, off I-15..."This old dog has learned something new! However the grey matter is somewhat diminished. Now I'm wondering how I ever put those ideas together. Guess it was urban myth!Oh, and by the way... I don't think I'd like to be in Afton Canyon during a flash flood! 1 Likes
Re: Banner Photos Reply #8 – April 26, 2017, 02:42:49 pm Still can't get the thought out of my mind so decided to do some research.Alas, could not find anything specific to Lazy Daze but was able to dig something related out of the archives. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VR6JQI8VCQI think this would be fun! 2 Likes
Re: Banner Photos Reply #9 – April 26, 2017, 06:25:07 pm Yes, looks like that would have been a blast! I guess we missed the boat, err train, on that? Just like the old, wild west! The closest I got to something like that would have been riding the Ely Ghost Train with my Dad several years back. My grandfather was a mechanic for the Nevada Northern and lived a couple blocks from the East Ely Depot.Nevada Northern Railway Museum Historic train rideHard to see but in the last photo, the local "working girls" like to come out and wave howdy as the train passes by. Still a little wild out here in the west! 1 Likes
Re: Banner Photos Reply #10 – April 27, 2017, 10:15:11 am I have camped twice at Afton Canyon campground, and drove down into the campground several years ago just to see if it is still there. It is.The campground is rustic, but has piped water. It is in a canyon formed by the Mojave River and you can get down to the river and across to the cliffs on the other side. Many years ago Cyndy and I were exploring the many canyons in the area and encountered an elderly couple on quads who were prospecting for turquoise in the area. We asked how they were doing and they showed us a paper bag with some nice pieces that they had found that day. They didn't tell us where they found it, but they did reveal that there are many mines in the area and they find the turquoise in the walls of the mine and they shoot it off the ceiling with a revolver! They had the revolver with them at the time. I can't verify if they actually were telling the truth, but I wouldn't want to be in the mine when they did that!On that same trip we found two nice meteorites, about the size of oranges, in a small canyon at a fresh landslide. I took them to Scripps Institution of Oceanography to verify what they were. They may be related to the Old Woman Meteorite which was found about 100 miles to the south east in the 70's. Old Woman meteorite - WikipediaLocated on the cliff across from Afton Canyon is an interesting mining site and a bunch of old cables and pulleys. When we researched it, we found that it was a great scam to attract investors and fleece them out of their investments! Apparently, the owners would put gold dust in a shotgun shell and fire it into the wall. Then investors would be brought in, sample the wall and assay it, and then they would invest money into the mining company thinking that the ore was rich in gold.We will make another trip to Afton Canyon! 3 Likes

Re: Banner Photos Reply #13 – April 27, 2017, 11:01:47 am I might add that if LD owners camp at Afton Canyon, they should know that the trains run all night long and less than a mile away. There is a long turn directly below the campground and the train wheels squeal and sing as they go around the turn, which is quite loud.Almost like being in most KOA's.
Re: Banner Photos Reply #14 – April 27, 2017, 11:08:09 am I'd rather take a trip on the train with my LD than be taken for a ride. Some people aren't very nice and others just are too gullible.https://youtu.be/OPIJlS4wfxwHeard about this as a kid from my dear Grandmother. Wise before her time.Kent 1 Likes
Re: Banner Photos Reply #15 – May 10, 2017, 01:50:02 pm I didn't want to start a NEW post about banner photos......but this post is about the current banner photo 'Early Ad' First off, I often don't get to see the banner photo, because I usually use my phone to log in, but when I use my MacBook I get to see them. I have loved all of the photos. This 'Early Ad' one is just fantastic. I have to say that typical Lazy Daze, I LOVE that they still have their same phone number!! (area code has changed). 1 Likes
