Why we split topics (and how you can help)
Although the moderator's view will differ, I've always felt a forum is similar to sitting around a campfire and discussing anything that pops into your mind. Sometimes our thoughts get off-track . . .

Moderators and admins can split off these sorts of things (like I just did  ;)  ), but it does create a little work.  Splitting makes searching for info in the future provide much higher quality results than a jumbled, catch-all discussion in one thread.  For example, if you were researching water pumps and did a search then saw one of the results was titled "Amazon Shipping" and was mostly about just that, you probably wouldn't read that thread.

If you see something mentioned that sparks the start of a separate discussion, you can hover over "more" then click "new topic" at the bottom right of a post.  This will quote the post (edit it down to just what you're responding to) and start a new topic for you.

And to clarify, Michelle, I meant no disrespect to our wonderful moderators! I realize the nature of their, and yours', sometimes thankless efforts to keep things organized and searchable (having been there, done that).  Thanks for your post which should help us keep things more readily searchable!

Sometimes I just drift off in the wrong direction - my wife will attest to that!  ;D

No worries - didn't see it like that at all - you became my helpful "straight man" so I could introduce/remind folks of that handy feature  :)
