Yes, perhaps a marine-grade product would work better:
Marine Non-Slip Boat Decking, Tape & Pads | Fisheries Supply
That's more like it and it comes in various colors.
Wonder how flexible it is and if it will wrap around the edge of the running boards?

In the past, a deck painted with epoxy paint, embedded with ground walnuts shells, was a desire surface.
It worked great for shoes or wet bare feet.

Hey, you'll have to come up with the epoxy paint, but I can spare some of Frankie's ground walnut shell cat litter if you want to re-do your running boards, Larry!  ;)

What I had was flexible enough to wrap around the edge.
