Transmissions and John Woods Automotive
I try to perform preventative maintenance on our vehicles and I was thinking of having John Woods perform a flush on our LD. His shop in Holtville, CA has been discussed here before and I believe was first brought to our attention by Andy Baird.

A few months ago another shop mentioned that the fluid looked a little dark. To me it didn't look all that different and it had been well under 10K miles since the last flush. I had it serviced at 22K where they replaced filters and fluid and then again at 47K but they only replaced fluid. Both services were performed by Ford dealers.

We use a Scanguage to monitor transmission temperature and I really haven't seen heat problems with the transmission. We currently have just under 57K but I thought why not just go ahead and get it done.

Spoke with John today about an appointment and told him the history of maintenance. He commented it was good that they changed the filters that first time as it was really important to do that the first time. He also said that he didn't see a need to get it done until I had 20K from the last service, since we were not having any issues. He also feels that service should be based on mileage not time. In our case the last service was in March, 2015.

Just thought I would mention this since honest shops are a valuable item.

Additionally, according to this website you can't judge transmission fluid by color.

Jim,

My experience was the same as yours.

John rebuilt the transmission in my truck.  Three years later I returned it to him for a flush and he recommended not returning for 20K miles.  I have found his transmission to be robust and up to the task of pulling a big load with a chipped high torque diesel (unlike the THREE previous Ford 4R100's that self destructed at 10,000 miles, 36,000 miles, and 60,000 miles.)  .  Furthermore, John is honest and a good guy.  Watching him rebuild my transmission was a great opportunity to watch a master take pride in doing excellent work.

No one services or touches this transmission except John.

If I recall you also wrote about your experience in more detail which was an additional factor in my calling him.
