Take3 litter awareness
Preaching to the choir...

I was recently researching charities addressing the amount of plastic polluting our oceans, and came across Take3, a small but well rated Australian group. About | Take 3 for the Sea

I was impressed with two things, the simple message and the group's drive to educate people about...litter.

For a long time as we camp and clean up after others we have tut-tutted about how people can go out into nature and leave it littered. We tend to think there are two kinds of litterbugs- those who don't know any better and those 10% who will never get the message.

We like the idea of directly addressing the clean up of the 10%, and educating the ignorant. Toward that end, we now carry a little bag whenever we walk, and make a serious effort to each bring back 3 pieces of litter.  Our little good deed.

Amazingly we usually see other campers walking by the trash as we follow along on the beach and pick it up. Perhaps an opportunity to educate.

While so many are looking for ways to save the climate/species/environment, why not start with 3 pieces of litter?

What do you think?

Paul,

I have for many years followed the notion..."leave it cleaner than you found it". I'm with you 100%. I always pick up litter I find around the campground or in the wilderness. Of course this works well in the city too.

Doggy doo-bags take up little room in a pocket and serve two purposes (if need be) one: to carry found treasures and two: to handle the stuff.

One gentleman took it all to a whole new level here... https://youtu.be/El6AU3riRI8

Just imagine all the free real estate we could be gaining with a little extra effort.

Ahhh...nothing better than your own island paradise.

YES!    We attended a ranger talk last summer (at a campground on the Oregon coast), that addressed the amount of litter in the ocean.  I was stunned by the number the ranger quoted for the amount of CONTAINERS that were dropped off of ships every year.  I think it was around 10,000!
Anyway, she suggested picking up three pieces of litter each time you visit the beach (or elsewhere).  We typically do that, now.

My oldest does a lot of the junior ranger programs at the national parks, that program gives information about the area park, but also does a lot to educate kids how to keep places clean, and preserved.  I know a lot of kids that do that program sometimes... its good that the information is getting out to the younger generation(s).

Thx for sharing this info!  For a long time I thought of the doggie bags as uppity-city folk stuff   :-[   (my farmer dad used to call it free fertilizer--though that was also a generation of farmers who hauled anything unwanted to "the ditch" with no thought about the consequences to the watershed/folks downstream), but I finally understood that the number of animals is more concentrated in the city, just like the people, which means it's harder for Mother Nature to keep up with the natural recycling.  Years ago, I used those facial scrubs with the microdermabrasion beads, & then learned they're just bits of plastic that wreak havoc on the water treatment systems & Mother Nature.  Though we always cleaned up when camping (thx to Girl Scouts), I do appreciate all of you who have been doing your part to educate the rest of us.
