It was great.Even with just a 40-HP engine, it was heaven for a 16 year old, car crazy kid, who was in love with speed.Larry

Modified for mountain off-roads and boone docking roads. Almost indestructible. Those bugs look similar to the 1968 I drove in college, with oversize off-road tires, a small lift and a engine skid.It was used to explore the desert and eventually the front and rear were chopped and a Baja Bug kit installed, to allow for bigger tires and less weight. If you go this route, be aware that lifting a VW is not easy, especially the front suspension. It requires cutting the front suspension apart, rotating it downward and then welding it back together. The rear requires rotating the torsion bars, preferably installing larger diameter torsion bars, with a higher spring rate.Larry
