I agree with others who recommended a camper van for now. The move-in price will be a lot less than a used LD that is dependable enough for a trip like that. More manoeuverable, better mpg, and you may be more likely to find mechanics south of the US who can still fix an 80s vintage engine with a carb, as opposed to the fuel injected, computerized starships of the 90s and beyond.

I almost went with the camper van idea because you're absolutely right, but there just isn't any storage in those things.  I looked at a few locally, but they just felt too claustrophobic.  Even with a Thule on the roof, I don't think it's enough storage.  Having driven down to the tip of Baja before and having a breakdown, it was amazing what the locals did to help me on my way.  I'll see if AAA can offer any insight regarding repairs on the road.

I hope to have everything prepared for when I return to the US from my travels.  The house will be sold and the RV will await my return.  Having spent time in a 26' rv, albeit a short time, I decided that, for me, the ease of parking in a parking lot and getting gas far outweighed my need for the additional 3' of space.  I may change my mind later, but I'm going with this right now.  I'm just trying to figure out how I'm going to get my 70lb pooch into the overhead cab bed! ;-)  Hopefully, I've found my RV.  I'm just awaiting a call from the RV inspection service to arrange the date.  The sellers are holding the rig for me.  A wonderful couple.  Really nice folks.  I owe a huge debt of gratitude to you Judie and everyone in this forum who endured my process to building rv acumen.  I was relentless in trying to get a handle on this rv business and most of you were patient and helpful.  Thank you so much.  I've learned a great deal and have much more to learn, as well.  Hopefully it will  be less painful for everyone, going forward.

You should go Judie.  It's a beautiful part of Europe, as you know.  I love Scandinavia.  I don't think the Winters are that bad, though I would prefer to go in the Summer.  I'm entertaining the idea of renting an RV and driving through Europe to Gibraltar with a friend, but that's for another day.:-)  Patagonia, Chile.  I've wanted to make that drive for years.

Two questions, Mimi: Did you buy an LD and the sellers are holding it until you return from your trip? And,  really? A 70 lb dog in the cabover bed? You may want to consider the couch.  :)

You might want to look at Coach Net or Good Sam rather than AAA for an emergency road service policy on the motorhome if the insurance that you get doesn't already contain that service. I'd also check very carefully with whichever emergency road service (and the general coverage policy that you get for the RV) for the limits of coverage, geographical and other.

Just kidding about the pooch :-)  She'll  be sorely disappointed at having to sleep on the couch.;-) I haven't bought it yet.  I'm waiting to hear from the inspection service regarding a date for the inspection.  These very kind folks are holding it for me until the inspection is completed, hopefully Friday.

Wow Joan, thank you.  I didn't think AAA could be beat for coverage, but I would like to save some $$$ without sacrificing coverage.  Thanks.  I'll check with both of them, including emergency road service in Central and South America.

Great information.  Thank you.

"Do I read correctly that you wish to drive your vehicle to Patagonia?  Is this the Patagonia that is in Arizona, or the one in Chile?  Undertaking a trip down to the tip of South America is quite a goal!  Another member of our group, who doesn't seem to post now, did a similar trip in an older unit.  Perhaps someone will be able to come up with a URL to those adventures.  I think you would find it most enlightening to read."

I'd like to get everyone's take on buying a rig (1991-2000) sight unseen. It seems to happen a lot, as far as I can tell.  Would you do it, or absolutely not do it?  Has anyone done it and regretted it?

Thanks.

Having helped a few folks both sell and buy Lazy Daze, there are usually really good buys "sight-unseen" but carefully checked, using a questionaire check-list +  any offer is subject to on-sight verification per specifications agreed previously in writing.  So go for it ... cautiously.

I found a very well cared for 1992 23.5' RB 60K miles.  It was purchased from the first owner 2 years ago and barely used since.  It is clean, beautiful really.

I'm so new at all of this, I need someone who knows what to look for, so the seller arranged for a huge rv dealership to inspect it.  I'm trying to get it done sooner through another inspection service.  I'm going to see if the inspection results are guaranteed to some extent.  Nothing will be finalized until the results of the inspection and I fly to see it.  The sellers are wonderful to work with.  Thank you for your guidance.  It's much needed.

The one thing I haven't sorted out yet is, since smog isn't required in their state,  I have no idea if it will pass smog in CA.  I'm hoping to get some clarification about this from the dealer when they do the inspection.
