How's The Weather In Your Neck Of The Woods?
Hi Folks,

Living in the Los Angeles area and with the Rose Parade Floating around, I was marveling at our recent abundance of rainfall.

I remember my childhood days here and there seemed to be a great deal of rain.

When I was very young my family, at the time living in Wilmington, CA just the other side of the LA River (yeah we have a river), I remember seeing the river absolutely flowing with water almost to the top of its man made banks. Crazy wild water rushing madly to the Pacific Ocean.

I haven't seen it like that in like...forever. So how bad is it here in LA for rainfall? Well here's a link to give you a better idea.

When I was a kid my Mom would say, "What are you doing in the house? It's raining! Go outside and play".

Thanks for the link, Kent. I moved to San Diego in 1979 and it poured like cats and dogs. The last few years have been brutal in so many ways. We are literally dancing in the rain here.

I guess we are "singin' in the snow" up here since much of our precipitation is in that form. Didn't get quite as much as expected from our last storm and it's slowly melting away. For the month of December, I measured 5.54 inches of mixed precipitation in our gauge. As of July 1. we are at 9.52 inches.

More expected this week!

OK.  I admit it.  I watched the Gene Kelly You Tube all the way to the end.  Wow!  That guy could dance!  Thanks Kent.

Cyndy and I watched "African Queen" on New Year and loved it. That entire era of cinema was innocent, refreshing,  and wonderful.  No plans for sequels or prequels, just good entertainment.

We are about 2 inches over our seasonal average today.  We need every drop. What's really important is snow in the Sierras.  This is a pretty unusual La Nina year, but I hope it keeps up!

"African Queen"...another of my LD collection classics. Bogart/Hepburn-Two Super Stars holding us in utter suspense from start to finish.

Thinking ahead, I recorded two parade pre shows and the 128th Rose Parade. Got the evening all planned out.

Always nice when the weather behaves for the parade, but really can't wait for the sky's to open back up.

Went to Basalt Campground,  San Louis State Recreation Area, CA, 35 to 55, Friday through Monday.  Had rain on Saturday morning.

Raining here in No CA since yesterday and looks like storm door is open the rest of the week.

Weather guys here predicting upwards of 6' of snow in Sierras.

Not so good if traveling thru mountains but definitely needed for the snow pack - bring it on.

Been raining here in West. PA since yesterday.  Very warm for this time of year (44 degrees now).  We will make up for this later this week with temps. in single digits, and likely some snow.

Just another boring sunrise here in the mountains. Lots of rain and snow on the way so got to git to town to resupply!

We got about 6 inches of snow yesterday down by Ashland. I-5 was closed overnight and it looks like they are just letting some trucks through now. I'm new to the area but told this is unusual. California shut it down and then Oregon didn't let anyone over the summit to get to California. I spent many years living in Colorado and it took a lot more than this little storm to close the interstate.

They close the roads here in California if it rains, which it is now, lol!

If you have had the misfortune to drive over I-5, south of Ashland, during a snow storm, you will understand why they shut it down.
The Siskiyou Mountain stage of I-5 is long, loaded with grades and all sorts or turns, it can be a very dangerous place during and after storms.
Make sure to pack chains and preferably take a 4X4 with snow tires.

The most curious part of these weather curves is our, sometimes, complacent attitude toward current trends.

If one presupposes that the weather will behave as it has in the recent past, one could very well find themselves in a very dangerous situation.

A long drought can sometimes be the precursor of a downpour. This is one reason it is very wise to check the incoming weather in canyons such as Zion. A flash flood can catch a hiker by surprise and spell disaster.

Our current weather in the California Sierras is a prime example. Snow pack for this weekend alone is predicted to be high.

Sure, we need it, but cautious attitudes can prevent trouble. Be safe out there. Happy travels.

Here in the Tehachapi's, the downpour continues. This is a warmer storm so it's all rain. Just took a peek at our rain gauge and estimate there is close to 4" in it with more to come. When it rains, it pours!

Yep, that Ashland stretch seems to get shut down each winter. It is the stretch of interstate I most critically check as we travel. Even Stevens pass which also gets shut down often is not as treacherous.

But we won't have to face the Siskyous till spring. Here it is 65 and sunny. Florida has opted out of the winter weather the rest of the country is experiencing.

Right now , the official temperature is -16*.
I went over to the place where I store the camper yesterday to brush a foot of snow off the solar panels and the rest of the roof. I wonder if LD factors in snow load when designing the roof.🤷‍♂️
Probably not.
The 'pink stuff' I put in the toilet and sink traps was almost solid and it was only +10* then.
I think I'm glad that's the only place I winterize with that stuff. The fresh water lines are simply blown out; nothing to freeze.

I've actually wondered that myself. Does LD do a snow load calculation?

I'm up near Lake Tahoe, at 6500 feet.  We got about 4 feet of snow in the last 3 days.  Today is a cold but clear window, then we expect 2 days of rain.  All of the local TV stations are predicting big floods.

Years ago, Yosemite Valley was completely flooded. Today you can find markers that are placed on the foot bridges crossing the Merced. They indicate the height of the flood waters over the tops of the bridges.

Water rose high enough to reach the steps of the Chapel. The flood wiped out the lower section of the Lower Pines Campground.

The cause of the flood? A prolonged heavy snow above the Valley. Followed by a prolonged heavy rain. The snow had no time to pack tightly before the rains came and was melted away causing the flooding of the Valley and the immediate evacuation of  everyone.

I am not a meteorologist but I'd be cautious in such situations.

Official measurement this morning from our last storm, 4.81 inches of rain!

Clear today and drying out, another storm moving in tomorrow.
