Unresponsive Advent microwave
On our first trip out we discovered that the microwave no longer works.  Worked on the lot, doesn't work in the desert.  We have a 1014 Advent MW912B.  The lights come on with shore power or generator and the clock colon flashes, but the keypad doesn't beep or allow us to set the clock.
Has anyone tried using this shop to fix microwave control panels?

For $54 or less they claim to be able to repair most microwave control panels.  Has anyone had any experience with them or any other suggestions? Since I have to pull the microwave anyway, removing the control panel looks pretty simple.

First check - look for loose connections inside, accessible fuses.

Harold,

It's interesting that you get power but no response from the touch pad.

The other day I was having trouble with my Marantz Pre/Pro in my living room home theatre. The remote would turn it on/off but nothing else. Likewise the unit itself would turn on by pressing the power button, but access to anything else was denied.

I located a replacement on eBay for a very good price, but hesitated making the purchase until I could get behind everything and unplug the unit from the power supply/surge protector.

Before I could get around to that, a couple of days later I used the remote again and everything worked again.

Sun Spots! Gotta love 'em. Try unplugging the MW and see what happens. The breaker seems ok since you have lights so it may simply need a reboot if that's a thing for this type of electronics.

Two years old seems too new to bite the dust. But then again, crazier things have happened. I do rembember someone on LDO replacing the touch pad not to long ago. So $50 to fix the unit seems pretty fair if there is no up charge.

We have a sharp microwave and its sounds like the same problem we had. We called the company and they provided us with a re-set code. It's worked great since then.

Thanks, Good ideas all.

I've pulled the plug and plugged it back in on shore power with no love. I'll call ASA electronics, the maker of the Advent brand and see if there is a reset code tomorrow.  If that doesn't pan out, I'll remove it from the coach, bring it into the shop and threaten it with tools and see if it wants to reconsider and start working. I may have my bride talk nicely to it and try the good cop/bad cop strategy.
Thanks for all of your good ideas.  I'll report back.

Hi Harold. For many membrane keypads, vigorous, repeated pushing of one particular key (i.e. 'start') can stretch the membrane above one key, so that it is always touching. I've found that I can wipe across the entire pad, sideways or from bottom to top a few times, and get that one key to lift off the contact inside. The device will start working again, for awhile. This is mostly useful to confirm that it is the keypad, and that everything else works. A new keypad is the long term solution. A better long-term solution is a new microwave. Relative to a repair, they are inexpensive, if you can find the right size. No benefit from 'RV' models, I doubt that their insides are any different from residential ones. RonB

Thanks Ron,
I called ASA electronics, the maker of the Advent microwave.  They said there are no fuses or circuit breakers, nor do they repair any parts.  The gentleman said if a microwave fails, buy another one.  I told him it is only two years old and he replied that that may be the reasonable lifespan.

I'll try your wipe trick and see if it works.

I'll look for another microwave that will fit in the space.  I'll call Montclair and see what if there are other brands they have installed in the last few years.

Apparently they are only an importer and don't want to be bothered. I highly doubt any microwaves out there are designed to be tossed in a couple of years, so if you have the tools, it would be worthwhile doing some disassembly to look for any obvious issue - such a loose connectors. An RV is a rough environment.
