Are you ready for a Super Moon that is also a Beaver Moon? November 08, 2016, 01:28:01 pm Monday Nov 14, the moon will be full and as close to the earth as it has been going back to the late 40 last century. If the weather is good it should provide enough light for some fun night landscape photos. If it is partly cloudy it should make for some nice viewing. John (hope to be moonstruck) DaCrema 2 Likes
Re: Are you ready for a Super Moon that is also a Beaver Moon? Reply #1 – November 08, 2016, 02:07:31 pm John,Sounds like a great photo op. The last lunar eclipse was fun. Shooting with my Nikon D800 e and Tamron 150-600 mm lens was very special. One mistake I made was forgetting to turn off the stabilization feature of the lens while on the tripod. This caused the lens to continually drift downward making it nearly impossible to get the shots I wanted. Got pics of the Blood Moon that night too. But due to the drift of the lens they were less than the best. 🌜Live and learn.Kent 2 Likes
Re: Are you ready for a Super Moon that is also a Beaver Moon? Reply #2 – November 08, 2016, 06:35:06 pm We will for sure be checking it out! We have a nice view of the eastern sky from our back porch, and at our elevation (over 5,000 ft.), it makes for some pretty awesome sunrises and moonrises, not too mention stargazing! 2 Likes

Here is a link that should take those interested in photographing the Super Moon to a step by step tutorial. One Shot: Supermoon from NikonThe steps provided are for the D800 e and the Cool-Pix P900, but I think they can be adjusted to fit most cameras.Hope this works.Kent 2 Likes

Re: Are you ready for a Super Moon that is also a Beaver Moon? Reply #7 – November 13, 2016, 07:10:09 pm Ok now that's interesting.I've got the 600 mm lens and both a 1.5 x and a 2.0 x teleconverter. I'll probably stick with the 1.5 since my Nikon refuses to auto focus the 2.0 Just as well though since my old eyes don't focus well past 100,000 miles and the 1.5 gives a sharper image. 🤓This could be fun.Now if I can just remember to turn off the lens stabilizer.Kent 1 Likes
Re: Are you ready for a Super Moon that is also a Beaver Moon? Reply #8 – November 13, 2016, 10:35:44 pm FYI,Another "Top Tip". If you have the ability, don't neglect to lock your mirror in the upright position to reduce camera shake when you take your shots.Or use a cable release or timer trying to avoid touching the camera to initiate the shot.Kent 1 Likes

Reply #9 – November 14, 2016, 11:20:16 am Advice from Nikon ...."set it to infinity and close down to f/11 or f/16 to let depth of field help with focus."While I agree with this advice in general there is a 'better' method. Its called Hyperfocal. For an in depth explanation Hyperfocal explainedIn the 'old' days before digital lenses there was a good graph on the lenses making it a bit easier to set this. Today we will have to use a chart. 2 Likes

The camera is a Panasonic Lumix FZ200 with a 24x zoom. It was zoomed all the way out and set on the intelligent auto setting. So the only thing I get credit for is holding it as still as possible and taking a bunch of shots to come up with a couple I liked.Jim 1 Likes

It has been said that you can shoot all day long and if you walk away at the end of the day with one keeper then you have done very well. You managed to pull off two.Like Bill Murray said in Ghost Busters, "Good shootin' Tex".Kent

Steve, I couldn't be happier with it. It is the first camera I have owned that gets actually great pictures even with the digital zoom. I would probably go with the next one in line should this one fail. Andy was the one who introduced me to this line with I think the FZ150 or even before that.I am fascinated by the moon and always wanted to be able to get good shots of it to take in the topography. We have gotten some great wildlife photos with it as well.Jim

"Yes, I read Andy's comments on the camera, but only after a glowing recommendation from the 'bus driver/tour guide' that was our very good fortune to have had on the bus out through Denali Nat. Park during our Alaska trip in 2012. She knew the locations of every animal and bird along that 92 mile road and took photos of most of them. I had to ask what camera she was using and that is when I was sold on the FZ200. 1 Likes

Andy was theone who introduced me to this line with I think the FZ150 or even beforethat." I hope we can discuss cameras a bit here, as that is such an integral part of RV'ing for me - one of the main attractions, in fact. Also on Andy's always knowledgeable recommendation, I have the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ150, and am astounded at the quality of the photos. Of course I now lust for the FZ1000, but it drops to only 16X zoom, so will make do with this one for a while longer. I got some pretty good shots of the moon from my front yard, but did not employ the digital zoom. Should have given that a try - perfect opportunity. But a neighbor came along, and we got to chatting . . . and the opportunity passed. The leaves of a tree were the only "background" I had, so the pictures are quite "meh", but it was fun. If I had deployed the tripod that was standing right next to the door, I might have gotten better shots, but I was happy with the experience.Andy, did you take any photos of the moon with your 30x Panasonic? Re: Are you ready for a Super Moon that is also a Beaver Moon? Reply #22 – November 23, 2016, 10:06:30 am Warning personal recommendations and opinions ahead.......Getting and owning a camera is a very personal thing. If I may use the example of a bat to a baseball player. The bat you like maybe to heavy or to light for me. I'm saying this because camera don't take images the owner take the picture. The equipment is just a tool. Experience is what improves the picture taking experience. IMHO were most folks fail is they 'ask' the camera they have to do something it can't do. I use a Canon G5 and a cellphone for most of my 'local' pictures. It's good enough for those occasions. But when I'm in the field doing what I call 'serious' shooting where I'll be doing big time photo editing I use a Nikon D750 with matching lenses. Most folks don't have any need any of this type of gear. In fact it wasn't till I had almost 40 years of experience that I was anywhere good enough with my 'eye' to even consider this expense. My point is use what you have.1. Stay within the limits of your equipment.2. Takes lots of images 3. Study them. Try to figure out what you could do to 'improve' them. Remember its personal. What I think is good you may thing is ugly. 4. If being honest with yourself you come to the conclusion your equipment can't get the image you have in your mind then and only then look for 'better' equipment. If you are interested this is a set of images I put together for a show ..... Favorites - Google Photos 3 Likes

Reply #23 – November 23, 2016, 12:43:34 pm Putting in a tourism plug here...& hoping it will lure some of y'all east of the Rockies.I went to a program at the Library last night about the total solar eclipse on Aug. 21, 2017. Apparently Chillicothe is almost right on the line for nearly 2 minutes of total coverage. Norborne (about 40 miles SW is a better spot, but Chillicothe is easier to find right at the intersection of US 36 & US 65, & the tourism folks are in full promotion mode already). The presenter said my farm 6 miles SW of Chillicothe would be better than the house at the north end of town--apparently 9 miles makes a big difference...Anyway, if anybody will be following the sun, the offer for boondocking is renewed...boy, it would be fun to see some LDs out on that hill doing "sun salutations." I'm gonna climb up on Ldy Lulubelle's roof, don my dad's welding helmet, leave the photography to others, & marvel at how insignificant I am in the big scheme of things. Y'all come. Lynne 2 Likes
Re: Are you ready for a Super Moon that is also a Beaver Moon? Reply #24 – November 23, 2016, 12:47:09 pm Over the years, my choice of camera gear has changed as I'm sure it has with many others here on LDO.When I was about eleven, I included on my Christmas Wish List a camera I thought was sooo cool. Spotted it in the Sears catalog. It looked spectacular, but hind sight shows how much I knew about photography back then. My parents filled my list, like they always did. With four kids, I was always amazed at the seemingly endless gifts under the tree. My treasure that year? My little Sears instamatic. The years passed along and my pawn shop finds and sundry 35 mm cameras moved along till this day where I figure I have reached my peak. While I have taken countless photographs, mine generally reside in albums placed in a drawer or files on my computer. Like many of us, I would imagine, they serve as a link to my past.Family events, old friends...even the odd items here or there, take up less room on "film" or in my memories than tucked away in the garage or warehouse. The old adage (yikes!), "Take a picture. It'll last longer". Sure can free up space. Now days I shoot in RAW format so this forces me be a bit more selective in what images I keep. Zoom in, check for details and trash it. Oh well, that's the great simplicity of digital photography.Maybe one day, soon, I'll get around to picking through my Super Moon shots. Until then, folks, keep shootin' and let's see what you've got.Kent 1 Likes
