Coolant hose split
Today I discovered a puddle of antifreeze under our 2002 E450 v10 engine bay.  I traced the cause as a split the the hose which appears to have been rubbing against a bolt head.

The part of the coolant hose runs from the opaque coolant reservoir to the junction of several hoses.

From my research I can purchase the "lower" hose part which appears to include all the hose components.  There is an "upper" hose part, a single molded hose, which appears could be the only part I need.  Does anyone have knowledge about these hoses?  Thanks, Matt

You might want to look at Larry Wade's photo series on "all things LD"; a folder of pics of "cooling system hoses" may help to identify the parts you need.

Thank you for that resource.  It appears Larry replaced the entire coolant hose system rather than just the upper hose that has split on mine.  Perhaps I'll have to purchase the complete hose system, but I'll wait for a bit to see if anyone else has some input.  Matt

Your LD undoubtably has the original hoses. They are 14 years old and timed out years ago, no matter what the mileage is.
Change all the hoses, including the heater hoses, unless you are prepared for a roadside breakdown.
You are lucky you found the spilt hose at home, consider it a message.

I have a 2003 LD, a year newer than yours and I changed the hoses two summers ago, after finding hardened sections of the lower radiator hose that go to the oil cooler. The rear heater hose was also hard.
I was fortunate to find the problem before a hose split.
Realize that you cannot easily examine all the hoses without removing them, especially the lower radiator hose.
Once you are in that deep, you might as well finish the project. You will probably never have to do it again.

The Motorcraft lower hose comes reassembled, with the oil cooler hoses set at the correct angles.

I had all the OEM hoses in my 2003 replaced several months ago at about 90k. All the hoses (that I could see from above and below) looked solid, i.e., no splits, no abrasion, no visible wear, on the outsides, but I asked the mechanic to keep the hoses that he removed so that I could examine them. Although none of the hoses showed enough interior wear to indicate that failure was likely any time soon, the condition of the interiors of all the hoses (as far as I could see by peering into as much of their curved innards as visible with a strong flashlight!) indicated that this preventive maintenance move was definitely timely.

As ever, YMMV.

The old hoses, like a replaced serpentine belt, are nice to carry with you, if you have room, just in case. In a pinch, they will work to get you on the road.

Thanks all for the advice.  I'm going to replace the entire cooling hoses as suggested.  I'd like to replace the heater hose too, but it looks more challenging.

Larry, how would you rate the difficulty level of doing the heater hose?

Other than removing the doghouse, changing the heater hoses is easy,  two hose clamps per hose.
Make sure to get the right hoses, with the quick disconnect fittings.

Thanks Larry.  Did you source your heater hose and quick disconnects from Amazon?   Matt

I bought replacements from Rock Auto but once delivered, discovered they were they did not come the quick disconnect fittings, needed for the heater core, and a flow reducer.  Ford does not offer complete heater hoses, so I bought the QDs from Napa. They attach to the heater hoses with hose clamps.
I removed the flow reducer and placed it inside the proper hose,  the 3/4" hose, I believe.
If doing it again, removing the heater hoses and take them to Napa Auto, for matching, would be abetter choice.

In moist Portland for a few days.
