More Bolts

Forgot to add while under the rig, tightening the coach frame bolts, also check the holding tank bolts, the generator bolts, the propane tank bolts and finally the entry door step bolts.

And I thought I was done with bolts!  Silly me.  So this afternoon, I crawled under the LD and checked these additional bolts.  Someone else has mentioned it's a tight fit without some kind of lift.  How tight?  Got grease or oil on my nose.

I wondered if anyone has thoughts about using Nyloc nuts on the step bolts.   Would Nyloc entry step nuts remain tighter than the original nuts?  Thanks in advance.

It's true that there's a great deal of clearance and/or wrench-wielding space under the LD, and if one uses a mechanic's creeper, there's a lot less!  I just wiggle around on my back underneath the rig using a large piece of heavy, slick-faced cardboard for maximum "scootability" when checking/doing whatever.

I learned the hard way to try to carefully assess what is needed in the way of tools, parts, paper towels, shop rags (and a clean cloth for stopping bleeding, an inevitable result of my forays under the rig) , containers, lighting, fluids, etc., and take the stuff with you in a box, bag, shallow bucket, or something else that's easily accessible; saves having to crawl out, find the missing "thing", crawl back under, crawl out, find the other missing "thing", crawl back under......

As one ages, this stuff can get a bit more challenging, so the fewer trips per job, the better!  ;)

Joan, you and I are long past the point where we should be crawling under anything short of the bed covers. Now's the time to bolster the economy and hire some young buck to do that sort of work.

For instance, I'm having a guy who's a whole lot younger than I to do the wrench work on Larry Wade's hitch upgrade and glad to pay whatever he says he has to have.   ;D

You could but I wouldn't.
If the carriage head starts to spin in the plywood, it will be very difficult to tighten or loosen a nyloc nut.
The step bolts loosen because the bolt's carriage head digs into the plywood, slowly compressing the wood.

A better choice in this situation is to use two nuts, locked together, once the primary nut is tightened.

Thank you Larry.  Sounds like your guidance will keep us out of nut & bolt troubles in the future.  Btw, crawling back under tomorrow to search for 10 frame/coach bolts.  I'm going to be sore.

That sounds like the Ladder Marathon I did a couple of weeks ago:  climb up the ladder with the blower, blow leaves as far as I can, climb down the ladder, move the ladder 3-5 feet, climb up the ladder with the blower, blow leaves as far as I can, climb down the ladder, move the ladder 3-5 feet, climb up the ladder with the blower...somehow this little one-story ranch house seems a lot higher up in the air than my grandmother's 3-story farmhouse we scrambled around on 50+ years ago. ::)

Yeah, I had a 20-something doing those things for me, but then I guess he decided it was too much work....anyway, I did Round 1 (the oak trees seemed to fill the gutters again in a couple of days   ???  & I'm still searching for "...some young buck to do that sort of work."   :P

Finished the frame/coach bolt exercise.   I found at least 12 frame/coach bolts and perhaps 14?  (I lost count as I crawled and inched underneath the LD.)  I was able to put a wrench or socket on all but two (2) bolts.  Two (2) needed a slight snug and another one (1) needed about a 1/2 turn.   I was unable to reach two (2) bolts/nuts behind some "structures".  I'm going to try reach the last two (2) next week because I'm just too tired to try anymore today.
