Rotten door
As I was removing some wrinkled up wallpaper I found this. Any idea where the leak might be come by from?

I'm certainly no expert in this arena but if I had to guess I'd say that there is a leak, internal to the door, allowing water to accumulate in the bottom and thence wicking it's way upward causing the rot. If, in fact, it's exclusive to the door that shouldn't be too much of a problem. I'd bet the factory could fit a new one without much trouble.

I hope to see other opinions on this query!   :(

Really only two choices - either the door has been left open frequently in bad weather, or a door fixture leaks, likely the window.

I have seen many LD doors with the same rot, including our old 1983 LD.
The leak(s) usually occur around the window, its frame or the door lock.
A session with masking tape and 3M 5200 can reseal the window and lock in a similar way that the end caps can be resealed.
After the sealant has cured a few days, use a water hose to test the seals.

While you are at it, check the end caps to make sure they are tight. At your LD's age, I would reseal all the end caps with 3M 5200 and eliminate future problems before they can happen.
All the window frames potentially can leak and, once again, a resealing job would be wise.
After twenty years, the Factory sealants will have dried up, partially shrunk and the adhesion isn't what it once was.
Our LD is six years newer and, this summer, I felt it was time to reseal all the windows. after examining them closely.

There were small gaps around the window frame perimeters that were not there five years ago. That small gap is all that needs filling, to prevent water from sitting in it. The reveal line can be as small as an 1/8", with careful use of masking tape.

Any water that gets around old door seals can contribute to the problem.
The door isn't made to be taken apart, so the rotted portion of the panel will need to be cut and replaced in situ, assuming the rest of the door is solid.  It's too old an motor home to change the door unless it is rotted beyond use, which is unlikely.

Thank you guys. The entire door is not damaged so hopefully we can cut and replace. I will show this to Wade and ask him to fix the end caps and seems.

Larry's point about end caps is good advice, just be sure to check thoroughly for any damage under them first.

Once you seal with 5200 there is no further work that can. E done on them without replacing them. And they are close to $600 for the set of 4 in the rear!

We found rot due to end cap leakage under the rear window and along the corner framework. I am happy that our front corners are strong and sealed.

Melissa, be sure to clean and thoroughly prep all surfaces to be sealed before masking off (I use the Scotch brand blue "painter's" masking tape in the 1.41" size.) and sealing with 3M 5200 (Fast Cure). Poor surface prep inevitably results in "sealant lift" and allows additional dirt and moisture to compromise the seal.

3M 5200 is sticky; using vinyl or nitrile disposable gloves makes sealing jobs less messy.  ;)

There are 2 ways

1)  Go to the Yahoo Archive and in the upper right search box type the message number

or

2)  Hover over "Community" in the menu bar and click "Search", then type the message number in the search box

The correct "hit" in the search results will start with something like Message Number:  <message number you searched for>

No kidding! Here's a tip from a friend: put on three pairs of disposable gloves before you start the job. Then when one set gets gooped up with 5200, you can peel then off and have a clean set underneath, instead of having to stop and pull on a new set of gloves each time.

Excellent idea. I wear two pairs and keep a pocket full of spares.
Harbor Freight's boxes of 100 gloves, used a with a 20% coupon, is a good source of inexpensive, disposable gloves, of various thicknesses and materials.
I use a lot of them when dealing with 3M's 5200...and it's worth it. Messy stuff.
