Where is the Spare Tire carried on the 2016 RB?
We visited the LD HQ last week and enjoyed looking at the 27' MB.  Unfortunately, they did not have a 27RB model available to inspect.  Can one of you kind folks tell me where the spare tire is carried, and how it can be most readily accessed, on the 2016 RB model?  Thank much!

Ray,

The 2016 RB is no  different from our 2015 RB (with some minor changes inside the coach and, I believe, the six speed tranny).

The spare is behind the classic spare tire cover in the rear of the coach.

Here are a few shots to illustrate. There is only one nut securing the hinged cover which makes access very easy.

Thank you, Kent. That is very helpful.  I like that location better than the location in the MB model. Easier to access.  Thanks, too, for the pix.  Would you have a link to others?  We are very torn between the two models, and when we drove down to visit last week we were very disappointed that there was not a MB model to look over.  We very much liked the MB, but we are still leaning toward a rear bath.

One other question.  Is the sewer drain in a perilous position on the RB model?

Hi Ray,

The pics I posted were of our 27' RB which we absolutely love. Others here at LDO prefer the MB for their own reasons, but we are extremely happy with our LD.

The sewer has never presented a problem. There are large skids on the bottom of the chassis at the rear that help keep you well aware of any deep driveways (supermarkets, banks and gas stations...).

As I  am preparing to head to Big Bear, I'm only too happy to show you around "Ms. B Haven".

Here are some more pics.

Hope this helps. Enjoy.

Ray,

In addition to the previous pics are shots of the bath area and the sleeping quarters  Pretty critical shots for a RB.

Here they are.

Kent -- You have gone above and beyond!  Very much appreciated.  Kathy saw these pix and has pretty much made up "our" mind as to which floor plan we'll order.  She really likes the lounge up front.  Thank you again.  Good info.

Ray & Kathy,

It's my pleasure. As always, it's a good idea to step inside the rig you are interested in.

My DW and I had thought the MB was the LD for us, but after our first visit to the Mothership and walking through the MB first and then the RB we quickly decided we liked the open feel of the RB.

You're decision is your own. Like I said previously, we love our RB and have been very happy with our choice.

If you haven't already done so, check out LD's web site: Motorhome Dealer | Low Profile Motorhome | RV Manufacturer | Quality Motorhome

Good luck with yours.

We have visited the web site many times.  Unfortunately, the pix on the site do not drill down as much as we would like, so we still have many thoughts and questions.  The Internet as a whole does not have the most recent models to look at, either.  If you have a moment, may I ask you to compare the outside storage between the two floor plans? Specifically, how much space in outside storage is lost when going with the RB floor plan?

Another concern of mine -- and one I will post in another message to the entire forum -- is the tow limitations of the bolt-to-bumper tow receiver.  We tow a Jeep Cherokee that weighs a bit more than the 4K limit of the LD package.

Ray,

The topic of storage has recently been addressed in some depth. Especially the MB. I believe Andy provided the dimensions of the exterior and possibly the interior bays and cabinets.

While you do gain the large outside storage bay below the passenger side couch, the drivers couch is above the fresh water tank.

There is quite a bit of storage beneath the dinette seats. Perfect for those odds and ends that you prefer to keep inside and don't use on a daily basis.

Digging around previous posts will garner some insightful details. With that, I took some shots of my RB outside bays starting with the passenger side rear and working my way around to the drivers front bay to the rear.

Dimensions I'm not sure about but I carry everything I need. From levelling blocks, chairs, BBQ's, tools, air compressor, Macerator and hoses. Nothing has escaped me.

Here are the shots as outlined. Hope this helps.

Where towing is concerned, I know very little although a recent post mentioned a good place to beef up the factory hitch. More than 4,000 lbs seems to stretch it a bit, though.

Best of luck.

Waiting for the rain to clear then time to wash the rig.

Thank, again, Kent, for taking so much time to set me straight. I appreciate your pix and your advice.  Good stuff.  The link to the towing blog was also very informative.

Ray,

My pleasure. While we are on the subject of spare tires, I began an archive search on the matter and discovered a short coming in my spare tire security.

As the access to the spare in the RB is so easy I became concerned about its possible theft. With that in mind, I ordered two lug nut locks on eBay.

These particular locks are made by Masterlock and go for about $10 each. Here's a shot of the one I purchased.

When we bought our 98 MB in April, there was an extra key that could not be accounted for.  I must have looked at the spare three or more times during pre-inspection  and never noticed the spare lug lock until later when I was checking air pressures on all of the tires.  Mystery solved and security heightened...

Ken,  Looking at your pictures I think our two RV's will be known as, "The Twins" except for the fabric.  Had some issues with the Motherships start time, not there fault, but things are proceeding with our 2017 RB for a possible late Feb. delivery.

Seventeen (17ldfun),

Too true on "things happen" . When I received the letter with my chassis Vin #, my brother and I drove right over to LD to check out the chassis & such.

A week or so later I received another letter stating that due to things beyond their control a different chassis and corresponding Vin was assigned to us.

Honestly, I really couldn't  tell the difference or the reason for the change. It's all good.

Don't forget the spare tire locks. 😁

Enjoy your RB and keep us posted on your arrival date. Babies are so cute.

Ron,

Very creative. Does the pad lock run through a stud? And, the fill valve seems unique as well. Very nice.

Nice job Ron, I am still trying to figure a way to use that round space for something, thought I would put an extra 1lb propane tank back there but it is to big by 1 to 2 inches.

Curious as to whether spare tire theft is a real problem or just a perceived problem? Has anyone on the forum had a tire stolen or attempted?

Still have mine but that doesn't mean much.

Kinda like the bay locks. Beef 'em up or leave 'em be. I do know that spare tire theft is a problem for truck owners. But then again a lot of those are hanging in plain sight.

Lug locks are cheap insurance even if no one ever bothers you. Hope I never have to find out.

Maybe leaving it flat and have half a nail poking out from the tread would send a would be thief packing.  😡

Hi Kent. After the wheel is placed on the bolts sticking out, I have a 1/4" thick flat steel bar about 1-1/4" wide that fits over the top two bolts. Then the wheel retaining nuts are put on and tightened. Two small holes in the flat bar have the bicycle lock coming through, then the lock posts come through the channel that you can see. The edges of the channel prevent access to the nuts , and the bicycle lock slides onto the lock posts. The posts stick all the way through the lock body. The thickness of the nuts holding the bolts in, and the thickness of the wheel prevent the curved loop of the lock shackle from touching the back of the motorhome. The right type of pry bar might pop the lock off easily, but you would still have to take off 5 nuts. Hopefully a thief would pick on someone else easier. I had the extension hoses laying around so I put a bracket to hold it where I could check it easily. Three foot extensions are available for pickups and such where the tire is stored underneath. I could have done  a through hole on the tire cover, but I like to look at my tire once in awhile. I thought of trying to store something in the center of the wheel, but never did. I've heard of people storing hoses and dump chemicals, gloves and such there. A round plastic container like a bowl with a lid might fit there, but I'd have to move the filler. Also the door is pretty floppy so I want to keep wear and tear on it to a minimum.
I've heard of spare tires disappearing in storage lots. Not much of a problem if you keep a 15 year old tire as a spare, but many times they are pristine new tires RonB

Ron,

Clever security measures. I finally got around to installing the Master Lock Lug Locks on my RB spare tire (pic attached).

Seems pretty secure & tight. After my next trip, I'll see how well it stayed tight and possibly I will add a second Lug Lock.
