Anyone (other than me) have their Garmin (mine's about three years old) refuse to load an annual update because it's now "too large"?  Mine defaulted to loading only the Southwest states instead of the lower 48 as before. That's pretty much useless. Is Garmin trying to "age out" those of us with "lifetime" update plans by overloading the update package to induce us to buy new?  I'd prefer going back to my old maps rather than this limited area but that's not possible. -- Jon
(Former) ‘06 TK “Albatross.” And (former) Vespa 250.   Alas, no more; both are gone.😕 Great memories remain! 😄

If your Garmin has an SD slot you can expand its memory by using that.
I have to that in order to have all the maps plus thousands of POI's that I use.

I had the issue with our Garmin Nuvi 1450. Adding a microsd card solved that problem. We currently have a Nuvi 2539LMT which has ample internal storage. However, the first time I tried to update it kept failing. I installed a microsd card and it has worked fine ever since. Another friend who bought the same model had the same issue and fix.

When I last did the updates for my Garmin 3590 I noticed the memory was rather full.  I go into the files and deleted all the non-English files voice files and old trips.  That made only a small dent.   Sadly I have not been able to figure out how to selectively delete stores that I am not interested in.  Our oldest Garmin, belonging to the wife could no longer be updated, she started using WAZE and will not go back.  Our next oldest belongs to the daughter, I had the devil of a time clearing old stuff and other things and doing the update.  It took several tries.  I think she will get the 3590 and I will get a new one that will have RV friendly programing.
We purchased life time maps for the older units and the 3590 came with life time maps and traffic.  Sadly the memory fills up long before the devise looses its usefulness.  I understand that people want more and more from the programing.  I also understand all the programing and extra files takes up a lot of room.  I just wish it was easier to delete files I'm not interested in.

Oh no, say it isn't so! I read both articles and did not see mention of DeLorme's "Street Atlas USA" I've owned several iterations of that program, I'm currently using Street Atlas USA 2014.

This mapping program has Google Maps beat seven ways to Sunday.

From DeLorme's eCommerce site

Street Altas USA will not be updated for 2016. Street Atlas 2015 will be the final version offered and will be discontinued when current inventory is depleted.

I have the Rand McNally RV GPS app that they are no longer supporting. No more updates to maps, POI's, nothing. The info is relatively current now but after not too long this thing will be a buggy whip. Have to think DeLorme will be on the same path.

Unpacking after our move I have ran across our old Delorme CD. It is old 201 edition but is free to anyone for the asking..
Otherwise it will be trashed in a few weeks.

Back in 2009, my map update was about a 4 GB file.  Since then, I have gone through several new GPS's, with my newest being a Garmin Nuvi in the RV and a Garmin Drive Assist in my Forester.  I did a map update two weeks ago, and the file was noted as being 5 GB, but the actual data transfer was done in about 90 minutes, so was considerably smaller than that.  So, I have not noticed a significant change in the file size.  As noted by others, most units will require a memory card for the update.

Perhaps you are now doing your updates over a much faster internet connection? That's what changed my Garmin updates from 6 hours to 2 hours!
