IRV2, cats, and "competing" social forums
Are you a member of IRV2?  I have been for quite a while.  I also have been a member of the Country Coach Owners Forum since before 2005, Northwest Country Coachers since 2009, RVillagers since 2015 when there were only 13K members (now more than 49K), this forum since at least 2013, and other forums.  But, just when you think you have heard it all, not so fast...:

Recently on IRV2, I responded to a lady planning to go RVing full time and worrying that her cats being confined in the RV was harsh enough and they hid when the RV started to move.  She was hesitant to confine them further in a crate while traveling.  She also was thinking about leaving them in a trailer while traveling and asking about training/walking the cats...  After I related how we did with our cats, I mentioned that RVillage had a lively discussion group about this and she might also be interested in that.  I then got a message from the moderator of IRV2 that said the part of my message that mentioned a "competing" forum had been deleted.  Of course, the first thing that came to my mind when I read the actual published message (with the moderator's note that material had been removed) was that the moderator must have deleted obscene language or something, which certainly was not the case, but who else would know that but me and the moderator?  Here is a copy of my message as moderated:

"Gentle People!!  They are cats.  They are not humans with human phobias.  They will get used to being with you wherever you go.  Cats panic when they perceive that their surroundings are not under their own control.  They want a safe place, so they hide in small places.  Crate 'em when moving and put the crate in the vehicle you are riding in.  The crate will become their safe place.  Stop periodically and let them out of the crate to roam the RV.  Have them wear a harness full time.  After a couple days, attach a short leash and let it drag for a while.  [Moderator Edit]"

Here is a copy of the actual message to me from the moderator:

"Just wanted to let you know that we do not allow the directing of our members to a competing forum such as Rvillage. Your post has been edited.

They are both social forums ! !   There is no money involved - membership is free.  There is even an IRV2 group on the RVillage forum and I am a member of that group as well.  When I asked whether the moderator was serious and mentioned the IRV2 group on RVillage, no response.  Crickets.

That's just one of the reasons I no longer read the IRV2 forums.  There are only two forums I read anymore...the Escapees Discussion Forums and this one.

I seldom read the IRV2 forums, and never signed up because, IMO, they asked for too much "personal" information. I have heard that some find the brand-specific forum categories very helpful, particularly if there is no "competing" forum that may offer pertinent information.  ;) 

However, if forum management/moderators eliminate posts that mention sources of information and/or links (pertinent to specific topics posted on IRV2 and also) found on "competing" message boards or forums, this silly, presumptive, "wedged head" policy could use a serious re-think.   ::)

Hmmm...

Let me count...I currently belong to 4 forums. LDO, a laser disc forum LDDB, a Unicycle Forum (yes I can ride a unicycle), and a Nikon Forum.

The only competition between them is for my time. But hey! It's Olympic Season.

Kent- a unicycle? I think that qualifies as a "competing" form of transportation forum, or a CFTF. Please consider yourself on probation. Oh, and do be careful, because Laser Discs are round, and if you stack several together you could use them as wheels, so this one is a bit risky too.

My Muni (mountain unicycle) has a 36" wheel. LD's (lasers not coaches) are 12" so in that regard I would be downgrading if I were to use them as circular motion devices. This is something I prefer not to do.

Always up, not down. Down on a Uni is a bad thing. UPD's in Uni lingo (unplanned dismount) are not encouraged but often encountered. Ouch!  :-X

Holy smokes! I had no idea that sport existed. Almost makes me sorry I gave away my 24" unicycle years ago... but riding in rugged terrain is more strenuous activity than I want to tackle at this point. ;-)

They come with disc brakes. Honestly, I am not nearly as crazy as those "other"
guys. The greatest thing about a Muni is the width and stance of the tires. Very comfortable ride. Stuff just doesn't seem to get in your way as much.

Andy, you're never too old to grab your 24" and hit the road. I've seen 80 year olds riding like teenagers.

I rode my first 24" Uni when I was a kid. Kinda thrashed it (belonged to my brother) and stashed it. Waited until I was in my late 50's until I got my own. Took about an hour before I was up and going. Legs get tired first. After about a mile or so it's nice to take a break and avoid those darn UPD's.

Actually, the Muni would fit nicely on the back of my rig. That gives me a great idea...

For what it's worth, here is a reply that I received from one of the iRV2 Forum Administrators regarding the premise mentioned above.

"While we do permit a reference to a specific thread or post in another RV forum that may help one of our member's resolve a specific issue, it's not appropriate to refer our members to another RV forum to post their questions, general reading, or suggest they join another RV forum.

iRV2 is for the discussion of topics here for our members. Suggesting our members go elsewhere for discussion is a akin to someone coming to a party at your house and notifying your guests that there's a better party at another house.

Thanks for understanding."

They are both social forums ! !   There is no money involved - membership is free. 

iRV2 does allow you to be a member for free and started as an independent, but they are now a commercial site (owned by Social Knowledge LLC, the same company that owns rvparkreviews.com, airforums.com, and many other"lifestyle" forums).  They make (most of) their money by selling ads on the sites.

I always encourage my guests to move the party on when the next party has a pool, my booze is running out, the cops are on the way, it is getting past 7:00PM, and so on. Same thing, no?

That's right. That's my Muni he just unpacked (well mines at home, but you get my drift).

I only wish I was as good as Terry. Check it out if you dare...but stay away from the Unicycle Forum...it may be hazardous to your healt (but an awful lot of fun).

IRV2 has been a goldmine of info for someone like me looking at SOB. The Winnebago owner's forum is very active...

Good to know though that big brother is watching andI should refrain from mentioning other forums.

IRV2 appears to earn it's revenue from advertising and has a commercial interest in keeping as many eyes on their pages as possible. I can live with this given the quality of the info there.

Yes I DO jest.  I fully agree any forum that allows ANY posts unrelated to its stated, narrow, limited purpose is headed into big trouble, followed closely by oblivion.

I experienced this frustration (censorship)  first hand yesterday. A post to the Winnebago yahoo group never saw the light of day probably because it cross referenced posts on IRV2. I'm doing extensive research on slides. I commented on my surprise (shock) at how many problems people report with them. Slides are so ubiquitous that I assumed they were mostly trouble free. Surprisingly, the yahoo moderator has allowed my poll of Winnebago owners on slides. It's a small sample (57) with the following preliminary results:

"My Winnebago Slide is trouble free. Love the extra legroom". 33%. (19)
"My Winnebago Slide is mostly trouble free." 7% (4)
"My Winnebago slide is a headache and unreliable." 2% (1)
"My slide is my worst nightmare." 5% (3)
"My slide is my worst nightmare, mechanical failures." 2% (1)
"My HWH slide is trouble free. Love the extra space. " 14% (8)
"No slides" 11% 6
"Slide mechanism replaced with new slim slide (power gear)" 21% 12
Other. 5%

Participants could edit my poll, hence the addition of some specific responses. (It started out more general.)

Slides can be nice when they work. It's not uncommon to have no problems for a long time. On the other hand, they can be a nightmare. And the problems are reported frequently enough to give anyone in the market for an  RV pause. I'm trying to isolate the troublemakers (e.g. Schwintek) and increase my odds of success if I go with a slide unit.
