AC service in Oregon/No CA
sorry if this is a double post. Don't see my previous try.

Our cab AC is not working & it sounds like we'll need it driving back home to LA  through the heat of the Central Valley end of this week. We're now working our way south & I'd like to find someplace in OR or No CA along the I-5 corridor to get it fixed. Any suggestions for repair facility. Am hoping AC just needs a recharge.

Thanks.

You can run the generator (to run the house AC) while you are driving. It will keep you cool in the heat of the day.

At one point I was visiting my cousin in Las Vegas, 112°, by the time I was leaving it was 120° in the LD. I started the generator to run the AC and also used the cab AC, it took 3 hours of driving to get the inside temp down to 80°

The Ford dealer in Ashland services Motor Homes.

My dash AC & heat were only blowing through the windshield defrost vents from the beginning--& I'd read it was horrendously expensive to address (involving removing the doghouse/pulling the dash/etc.  The service manager at Kelly Ford in Chanute, KS, discovered an access panel on the dash (under the velcroed fuzzy dash cover).  Somebody had made a home there at some point & gnawed on the vacuum hoses.  Jake was able to cut off the gnawed portion, properly re-attach & voila/wonder of wonders, dash AC worked marvelously across the vast wasteland of KS when I headed on west to Denver the 1st of July.

Good luck!

Well, it appears again that my earlier reply did not go thru so let me try once again. A follow up & thank you to all of you for your suggestions.

LazyBones, I called Hendersons from the road when it became apparent we wouldn't make it to Grants Pass before closing. A very nice young man called me back to tell me that they don't do "front" ACs and referred me to Bridge St Auto & RV Repair.

Went there in the am & they told us they were booked for 2-3 weeks out & couldn't help us. However, they called around, found nobody else in town either, & finally made arrangements w Crater Lake Ford dealer in Medford. Ford folks finally figured out that we'd just lost all our AC coolant & recharged the system. Thank heavens! since when I pulled the temp sensor out of the fridge & hung it out the window in the shade at the rest area just south of Redding, it read 110!  And it felt much hotter in the sun!

Anyway, although they didn't actually work on the vehicle, I wouldn't hesitate to refer folks to Bridge St Auto & Repair both for their professionalism & helpfulness. Likewise, Crater Lake Ford.

And Schroeder RV Park on the Rogue River in Grants Pass was lovely, if you're looking for a place to stay.

Did they check for and fix the leak? This is a sealed system and if it leaked out once it will do it again.... Hopefully they at least put dye in so the next time the leak can be located..

I had similar Cab AC issues in our LD. After several trips with the AC working perfectly, it stopped working and only blew hot air.

Headed to the Mothership for a little "ding" in my coach door a week later and the AC worked fine. After the ding was removed (snagged a trailer at U Haul getting Propane) I picked up the LD looking as good as new (thanks Vince) and the AC no longer worked.

Took the rig to Caruso Ford in Long Beach and it took them a week to finally get the AC to hold tight.

It's been working fine since then. Oscar at Caruso said that sometimes the dye doesn't show up at the leak for months. This presents a problem since they need to see the leak in order to fix it.  I guess I got lucky.

Good luck.

Susie,

I'm glad you got the help you needed with your AC problems. I got a personal e-mail from my Dad (Lazy Bones) telling me my original post was showing my "Newbieness" for suggesting Henderson's. I was sure that if in fact they did not repair AC's that they would be able to lead you or others in the right direction. And I see they did!!

It never hurts to ask ;)

Darn it all! I must be getting old... you have to figure that when you get upstaged by your own daughter.  ::)

There are electronic leak detectors capable of locating leaks of less than an ounce per year for all of the common refrigerants used in air conditioning applications.  A good one can easily cost several hundred dollars, so not everyone wants to invest in one.  If the problem returns, it would be worth the effort to find a repair shop that has such a device.   JMHO

Good advice Bill,

As it is my LD is still under factory warranty. In fact, though I did mention that  when I brought the rig in, it apparently slipped his mind until I reminded him. The very next day the AC was fixed.

Miraculous? Not really sure. I do run it once a week just to make sure everything is still cool with it.

Crater Lake Ford did put leak detector in but I haven't had a chance to check it since we got back.

However, the AC system worked fine over next 3 days of 108-112+ heat. In fact, I noticed during one stop maybe in Tulare that the cab AC cooled the entire front half of the interior. Now that I think of it, if I'd put my reflectix (sp?) pieces in rear side windows while driving it might have done better all the way back.  Duh!

Unless someone is in the coach, I've heard that some LD owners fold the cab over bed down and draw a curtain between the coach and the cab. This helps the truck AC to run more efficiently.
Think I'll give it a try on my next trip.

Good to hear your AC is working again. I was at a bit of a loss for the few days mine was down.

Can't wait for November and cooler weather.

That sounds great, glad it didn't leak out on you..
