I'm attaching another photo showing how the Coolaroo is attached to the side of the LD. Two existing screws in the top cap were removed and replaced with eye hooks after sealant was squeezed in the holes.

I like the Coolaroo setup you showed, Chris. That might work on my midbath--and it would shade the fridge as well as the rest of the coach.

Thanks. It's a quick project. I did use one other person initially to measure where the eye hooks should go. We stood on opposing step ladders and stretched the Coolaroo for accuracy. The open end snap hooks make it easy to attach and take down.

I like to go to Puerto Peñasco (a.k.a. Rocky Point) for several months in the fall/winter.  I dry camp at a campground that is literally right on the beach for $200.00/month.  The RV park has a dump and water, showers, and WiFi.  The manager will call a propane truck to come to you for propane, and he will also "dump you out" and provide reverse osmosis water for a nominal fee.

The problem is at times it can be windy, and even though I roll my awning in almost all the way when I'm not there it's just a big issue.  There was a huge wind storm last winter and my poor awning was "almost" rolled in all the way but needs to be "adjusted" now.

It seems easier just to NOT use it at all.

Has anyone had any experience with NOT using their awning and provided shade in an alternative manner?  I'm thinking of taking a patio umbrella and base and just putting it up outside my RV.  There are other people who have huge RV's that leave their awnings out "almost" all the time, but they're pretty securely weighted down.  Usually, someone has a tear that needs to be fixed.

Some people use pop-up shade structures (like screen rooms), but wind is an issue for these too.  I want something that is semi-permanent that I won't worry about in the wind.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Go to Media, all albums, and in the search box type in "coolaroo shade sail". I attached this to the driver's side, but there's no reason you couldn't do it on the passenger's side.

It shows the pictures but how does one get to the description of what you did in your original post?

Thanks,

Our awning is also broken and it is something I really miss right now even though we are in Northern Minnesota and it is not that hot. Most of the other RV's we see have stronger power awnings. This LD awning even when working, was unusable in the slightest wind. The awning situation is on our list of reasons to consider SOB as we prepare to buy a new RV in a few years.

I feel if there is anything I can complain about my LD it is the awning.   Cheap cheap cheap in a word.   The second time I put it out the middle bar fell apart and to the ground.   Since I live in the PNW wind and rain are a fact of life.   When I saw the mod that Chris did I was inspired.   Its very very easy to install.  Just remember to buy stainless steel high grade eye hooks.   And a high grade patio sail shade.   The cheap one will let rain thru.    I also brought a pair of high end REI tent poles.    Remove two screws from the roof line , one in front and one in back.  Put a bit of Lap sealant in the holes then screw in the eye hooks.   When camping attach the 'sails' to the either side of the RV.
Last week I had a medium grade front blow thru with no problem to my homemade awning.   The worst thing that could happen is the tent pole comes lose and the  shade hits the side of my RV.
If you are going to the Joseph camp out we will be there to demonstrate the setup.

I'm South of Todos Santos in the Winter and agree that the LD awning is garbage.      I've made the mistake of leaving it out overnight to have a wind come up at 5am -- I held onto the awning unable to retract it -- the wind was violent enough I thought the awning was going to rip off the base.   Even with the center piece, there's enough slack to create noise from buckling in wind.     I put it out and in several times a day for years.

So, I leave it in now.   Last season I started using a blue tarp and next season I'll be using the Coolaroo.    I'm fortunate to be next to a palapa that I can tie the tarp to.   Couple 12' squares will do it.

My 5th wheel had a power awning and adjustable wind sensor that would retract the awning at 3 or 5 knots, something like that.      Never thought the awning was going to fly away and I definitely had peace of mind.

Why LD has continued to use the Fiamma awning is a mystery.
If it is destroyed, upgrading to a stronger awning is possible.  Today, there are many different types of awnings available, there may be much better choices today, it's worth investigating.
Our 2003's awning is still working but it is never left out when we are not present or at night or anytime winds may come up, in other words, most of the time.
When camping, instead of completely stowing the awning each evening, I will leave the arms attached and loose, and roll the awning most of the way in, leaving only a few inches exposed. It has been used this way in strong winds without damage and is a time saver.

Do keep an eye on the plastic shock absorbers, they break easily, after they are a few years old. Replacements are available.

Coolaroo Ready-to-Hang Shade Sail 13 ft. Triangle

I brought and today use this Shade Sail.   The operative word here is 'shade'.   This sail will not protect you or your outdoor items from rain.   If being dry during a raining day is important then one most look for a sail that has a tighter wave.

How are you using it, Glen? Attached to the LD? I assume you mean tighter "weave" and not "wave".

:o  :o wave - weave ..... so I only miss one letter (sigh)

I've attached it to the LD.   I discovered the 'rain' problem after a night on the coast.   Put all my chairs and BBQ equipment under the 'sail' only to wake up with everything wet.    Hmmm I said to myself.    Thinking maybe I'll have to put out a few more $$$$$ to get a water resistant shade/sail.
