I understand that older units grounded the speakers at a ground location near their mounting points vs. running two wires up to the unit which is required by newer receivers. Does anyone knows when this changed? Just wondering if I have a very large job ahead of me or a relatively easy one.Thanks, Jerry

It also sounded AWFUL (hissing, pops and crackling), so I junked that wiring setup with the quickness. Agreed on both counts; this is what I did with Gertie (1985). First, one-wire-plus-chassis-ground speaker wiring is trouble-prone; that's why they don't do it that way any more. :-) Second, if you have 20- to 30-year old speakers, the cones are probably in bad shape and the rubberized surround rings are almost certainly shot. Works pretty well until you want to take it out. My '99 has two wires going to each speaker, no grounds. You'll be able to tell by the wiring at the back of the old radio. Do you have speakers in the front doors? You could pull those to see if they have dual wire or just one each with a common ground. My speakers in the back overhead compartment were easy to get to because of a removable panel in the floor of the compartment, tiny little brass screws. I didn't like that LD had left the speaker magnets sticking up through the floor and were just exposed, so I built a closed box to protect the speakers more. No Mu metal, so don't place anything up there that could be damaged by a magnetic field. I use it for bedding for the king sized bed. I was expecting all the calking issues I had read about, and found the radio supported only with a bracket and screws. Did need to replace the front dash speakers, but due to age related sound quality (dried out). Rear speakers still sound ok.Lisa and Blue

I replaced my radio a couple of years ago and made a color-coded diagram of the Lazy Daze wire colors and the automobile-standard colors.
