Title: Clear Coat
Post by: jor on February 11, 2025, 04:42:42 pm
I've read that the factory used Imron paint. Did they also use a clear coat? Thanks.

The Factory used Imron or a two-part polyurethane substitute. AFAIK, They never used clear coats
A clear coat would fail years before the underlying polyurethane would.
Even a well-polished LD will never have the deep shine that clear coats can deliver
I prefer having paint that is more durable than shiny.

Thanks, Larry. I'm using an acid based cleaner to remove some persistent water staining.

For water stains, I have found rubbing a cut lemon against the area helps.

I'm pretty sure my 96 has clear coat over the paint.
It's been chipping off for years now, the hood where it started is much brighter white where it has chipped off most.
Other areas of the coach are chipping off as well.
Maybe someday it will all be mostly gone, otherwise I will probably just let it add to the patina.

Hi Jota;  The cab part of the chassis came from Ford painted.  Lazy Daze (I believe) paints over that with polyurethane, when the entire coach is painted.  Perhaps some part of the prep wasn't done very well?  I have gotten rock chips in the front area where the urethane has broken off, with a slightly different white underneath. I know the entire history since I got the coach with 35 miles on it, new from the factory.  (Tomorrow Bluebelle will be 25 years old!)   RonB

Older LDs were painted with acrylic paint that did not wear as well as the more durable polyurethane. The stripes on our 1983 LD were faded and badly oxidized when the rig was only 12 years old.

I have seen no indication that the LD repainted the Ford cabs; I assume LD matched the coach's white paint to the Ford's.

Some vintages (including my 2015, I believe) used an industrial polyurethane from Cardinal Industrial Finishes, soon afterwards they switched to Imron.

Not sure, but I believe they painted the cab in the stock Oxford white along with the coach.

I'm using an acid-based cleaner to remove some persistent water staining.

Our LD develops water spots around the water-fill door, it dribbles after filling.
I buy 30% vinegar at Home Depot for spot-killing weeds and have found it also does a good job of dissolving hard water deposits. Apply the vinegar with a kitchen sponge with a soft-scrub backing, letting it soak for a while before scrubbing the deposits off
Vinegar works well for cleaning, removing the thin layer of mineral deposits that form over time on the entire surface of the rig caused by rinsing.
Steve's method of using a lemon should work just as well.
