Title: Vent cover replacement.
Post by: NADAZE! on October 16, 2024, 04:02:52 pm
I need to replace two of my aged vent covers. Do some of these vents require removing the vent to access the lift mechanism screws? I removed the interior screws but the screen will not come out.

Thanks in advance!

Two roof photos. The screws are for the vent hood. Because the trim is old I don't want to try and force removing  for fear of breaking.

After a closer examination of my vent screen and trim I discovered caulking.
I can't believe the mothership would've caulked this knowing it would be impossible
to remove the screen to replace a vent cap. These has been done to two other vents as well.
What are your thoughts?

Thanks

Looking at your photos, the screen appears permanently glued into the plastic frame during manufacture; it isn’t designed to be removed.
The old bathroom fan moves very little air compared to a Fanastic or Maxxfan.
It may be time for an upgraded replacement. Our LD came with the same fan and was replaced the day after the delivery.

Thanks Larry. That's what I was afraid of. I hate to replace multiple vents due to a poor design.
I 'll probably replace the bathroom vent. It is the worst cap. The other vents I'll install Camco vent covers.

Installing vent covers on top of the roof vent is a good idea for all rigs. The covers prevent sun damage to the vents and allow the opening the vents during rain.

My 30' LD has 5 roof vents. Would it be okay to cover all of them?

Why not?  It has been done before.

"Would it be okay to cover all of them?"

I have a 30' LD along with it's five roof vents... all of which have MaxxAir fans with integral covers.

Not advocating that you spend that many bucks but I can create a mini wind storm through the length of my coach by manipulating input/output and speed of the fans. Who needs A/C?

Thanks Lazy Bones. I may install a couple of those for the vents that need them the most. My LD has 3 fan vents.

We consider aftermarket covers for all our vents an essential upgrade.  They offer much better protection to the somewhat fragile fan covers from most things following from the sky. And of course it’s especially nice to run the fans when it’s raining.

Only the escape hatch lid is unprotected which I hope to remedy someday with a “major” upgrade to a 12V fan.  However since that’s been on my wishlist for years it might just remain there!’

"I may install a couple of those ..."

I typically open the cover on one end of the coach, set the fan  to ingress at low speed, then set the fan at the opposite end to egress at what ever speed it takes to create a draft. That way you can draw out any hot air, effectively cooling the entire coach!

Alternately you can set one (or all) fan/s to exhaust if you have a window or door open with the same effect.  ;)
