Title: “Spare Tire” Seal
Post by: HiLola on April 09, 2022, 03:19:17 pm
I noticed that the faux spare tire sealing gasket is starting to come loose. The factory rubber gasket is round, making it very difficult to reattach to the cover. I tried Gorilla gluing it without success. I’m thinking a different type of gasket may work better but am looking for suggestions.

Greg,

Perhaps calling the mothership for a replacement would help. I’m not sure that mine is glued on. Perhaps cleaning the leading edge of the Continental Cover with alcohol and then adding double sided adhesive tape would keep the gasket in place.

The rubber seals on the outside bays are kept on by the same type of adhesive. The rubber seal LD sent me for my bays utilized a peal off paper to expose the adhesive bonding surface.

Here is some double sided tape available on Amazon. Teskyer Double Sided Tape, 0.59 Inch Wide by 16.4 Ft Long, Free Cut Double... (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B096WYFQM8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ZD4W96E5YPNAVDFPQWPQ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1)

You need Trim-Lok (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NL3ZS6E/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1).

How about 3m 5200 FC in black.

You need Trim-Lok (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NL3ZS6E/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1).

It looks like the original edge trim is breaking apart, replacement is the easiest choice.

Thanks Andy!  Looks like this is the one that will fit (I measured the thickness of the cover at 1/8").  This one has the sealing bulb attached:

That's interesting... my 2003 midbath's (fake) tire cover just had plain Trim-Lok, with no sealing bulb. Over the years on my rig, the Trim-Lok scuffed the underlying paint. (Not that it was a big deal, since that area was hidden by the cover.) The added soft gasket looks like a good idea, as long as it doesn't prevent the cover from closing fully. That could potentially be a problem on the hinge side. But maybe it's sufficiently compressible that you won't have any trouble.

Just replaced the seal with the one I ordered from Amazon (Trim-Lok).  It wasn’t intentional, but the replacement seal has a larger bulb size which I think will actually work better than the original. The one photo shows the difference in size between the original and replacement. I bought 25 ft. which is enough to do two replacements. The corners near the hinge are a bit of a bear to do, especially when you do it yourself. I used a cushioned patio chair to support the cover while replacing.

Hi Greg;  Thanks for the pictures. I like that soft rubber bulb in the seal. It would protect the paint more. Mine has rubbed the paint away in places.  My older seal is white btw. Black looks just as good.
So did you put that wing nut on? I just have a 5/8" hex bolt head. Oops, that's right...no tire in a MB.  RonB

That's a far better option than trying to glue the old back together. It looks really nice.

Thanks, guys! Ron, yeah I installed the wing nut.  One of my monthly checks is to open the cover and look for moisture (probably overkill) and I got tired of looking for a 5/8” wrench!  ;D
