Title: Gas Prices
Post by: Don Malpas on March 19, 2020, 08:36:53 am
The economic suffering caused by the virus and the attendant hysteria promoted by the media is going to really hurt a lot of people. That can not be minimized. The financial loss will not be offset by lower gas prices, but they are a rainbow for those traveling. Gas was $1.69 at Costco in Montogomery, AL yesterday.

I was thinking it would be a good time for that trip to Alaska I've always wanted to do with these gas prices but they just closed the Canadian border. Can't win with this thing I guess.

"Gas prices could hit 99 cents in some states due to coronavirus and supplies, expert says"

Good time to drive unless you drive to California. LOL

"The U.S. average hit $2.24 on Tuesday,"
"California’s price remains the highest in the continental U.S. at $3.29"

Driving in the Valley down the 99 the other day I saw gas prices at $2.75. They are probably lower now.

Good news. Going to California this summer to see my mom. Generally I fill up in Klamath Falls and try to buy as little gas in California as I can but it might not be so bad this year.

On another note, please use caution when pumping your own fuel.  Use disposable gloves, or some other way of avoiding directly touching the pump handle or other surfaces.  I just filled up the car yesterday and used a Clorox wipe over my finger to touch the screen and then used it to handle the pump handle.

I paid $3.19 two days ago!   :D

Good suggestion. I am now keeping a little spray bottle with 70% alcohol, as well as a few pairs of gloves, in the vehicles. One reason I like Arco is that many stations have hand sanitizer dispensers at the pump but I see that service disappearing soon with the present lack of availability.

Speaking of Clorox wipes, I purchased some at Home Depot about a week ago and there was plenty on the shelves. Did a check today and nada. What a difference a week has made.

By the way, Kern County just confirmed this morning our first two cases of Coronavirus.  :o

Shell station near our home in NE Ohio has regular for $1.77. Costco now at $1.56.

This reminds me of an Alanis Morisette song from back in the 1990's, "Ironic". Low gas prices and nowhere to go; isn't it ironic?

Today, the Woodland Hills Costco was $2.79 at the pump, $2.66 after the Costco Citi Card 4% rebate.
Seems cheap for us, it could go a lot lower as the economic impact of the the virus and the Saudi/Russian oil war continues.
My wife isn't working and springtime's the perfect time of the year to travel.....sigh.
Crazy times!

Due to a health issue I have, I knew we would not be on the road this year. So we will miss the low gas prices. Dorothy noted the news this AM that oil may go to zero. This happens when the cost of storage exceeds the market price.

We were hoping to do a garden again this year but not sure if we can buy garden materials. Online perhaps?

You might find some of the local stores will deliver for free, in an attempt to keep their employees working and the cash flowing.  With the lockdown in California, things are changing daily.
I bought a garage door opener online two days ago from Home Depot. The nearby store had five of them in stock and I was given the choice of picking it or having it delivered the next day for free.
Not wanting to go out, I had it delivered. spraying the box with bleach and letting sit for an hour before touching without gloves.
Call you local landscaping supply and see what their policy is.
Smaller items, like seed, can be bought online.

Greg,

Pinetree Seeds has been our favorite online source for garden seeds for years.  Great customer support.

Lee Valley garden tools aren't cheap, but they're high quality.

My wife says her usual online seed supplier is out of stock. Fortunately we have quite a bit of seed left over from last year but we went in yesterday to get starts such as tomato and the local nursery was sold out.

$1.49 at Costco in Montogomery, AL today. It's been about 20 years since I recall it being that low.
OTOH, petro firms are bleeding red. Cutting pay, perks, dividends. That will hurt a lot of folks.
Petro reserves are being filled at bargain prices.

If I remember correctly, late last year Russia and Saudi Arabia got into a spat and both were increasing production.   That was going to hit the price on the supply side.   COVID-19 broke out and is hitting the demand side for more downward pressure.

I run premium with no ethanol which is spendy in all my small engines. Might be time to fill a couple of 55 gallon drums

Costco Signal Hill, CA today gas price is $2:19 Taking into consideration CA & Local taxes that puts the price around $1.75 before tax or thereabouts.

Rats! My tanks are all still full.

That is OK Kent.  Now we can go into deflation mentality:  Why buy today when it will cost less tomorrow?

Rats! Spoke too soon. Local Costco prices fell to $2.15. Only empty gas tank at the house was the lawn mower.

By the time I got there for a gallon of gas the price was back up to $2.29.

I usually love roller coasters. Not so sure any more. 😏

Question - I was considering getting a Costco card for the 4% cash back for gas.
However, they say it is "only for automotive gas", other purposes only give you 1% back.  The Dictionary defines Automotive (https://www.dictionary.com/browse/automotive) two ways and one definition could exclude RVs.

Do you all get 5% back for all RV fill ups?
I am especially interested in people who full-time and do a larger fill up more often.
Has anyone been given only 1% rebate for their RV purchases?

Another thing that deters me is that all our other cash back cards either do instant rebates (the next day) or at the next statement.
Not getting the rebate for a year is a long time.

Jane, the 4% cashback is for all gasoline purchases at Costco. Costco gas in California is self-serve and we always buy gas there, if possible. I've never seen one selling diesel.

The LD is automotive, they will nit deny you filling up y our tank with cash back. I also use BJ's card with no issues.

We have a fairly new Costco here in Bellingham, WA, but every pump has diesel as well as 2 grades of gas.  No diesel may be a California problem.

"No diesel may be a California problem."
---
Costco in San Jose (Great Oaks/Raleigh Rd. station) sells diesel; it's $4.76 per gallon, but they have it! Gas at that same station is $3.53 for 87; at local top tier stations, e.g., Chevron, 76, etc., 87 goes for $4.17-$4.50 per gallon.

I checked, the only Costco in San Diego County that sells diesel (for $3.739) is in Chula Vista. All the other Costco's in San Diego County only sell gasoline. I see some Costco's in Riverside County do sell diesel.

However, the closest Costco to us (Vista, CA) will be moving the pumps from the southeast corner to the southwest corner of the property later this year. We'll see if they add diesel pumps.

I took the LD to my granddugher's 10th birthday party in Raley NC in 2019.  The 4% back on 8,000 miles of gas (mostly Costco) more than paid for the card's annual fee.   The Folsom Costco has diesel on 2 or 3 of the 4 islands.

There are two Costco locations in Bakersfield.  One of them sells diesel and the other does not.
